    Stage1 4bd1 into 110

    I've been offered a complete 4bd1/lt95 setup from a Stage1 to put into my '85 County (currently 200tdi).

    Other than general fitting and hooking up the motor/trans, from what I can work out I'll also need the following:
    1. Fabrication and engineering approval of engine mounts
    2. Get a V8 radiator and shroud
    3. Sort out a power steering pump as the Stage1 4bd1 doesn't have one
    4. Do lots of soundproofing

    Any other gotcha's that I've missed?

    The PS pump concerns me a bit. Is it possible to fit the front cover and pump from a truck engine?

    its often easier to use a newer motor than your chassis when doing a conversion due to anti-pollution gear etc that comes with more modern motors (from the engineer's perspective).

    Am I reading it right that you have an 85 county that was converted to 200TDI and now you wish to convert it back? or was it a V8 to begin with?

    Orginally a V8, converted to 200tdi a couple of owners and many years ago.

    What is wrong with the 200TDI?


    I an still thinking of taking our stage one/ 4 speed box out of our series 3, and then putting it into a 1990 RRC that is stiltting at home with a V8 that dropped its timing chain.

    Trying hard not to get into a "why are you doing it" discussion.
    There's nothing "wrong" with the 200tdi - I'm wanting something that has reasonable torque off boost, and dont have to wring its neck all the time when towing.

    Hi Steve, I don't know what your state transport regs are but in Qld you don't need an engineers certificate to put a 4BD1 into a county model as you could buy them new with either V8 or Isuzu 4BD1. Check the threads here on Isuzu engine mounts as there is some good detailed information on the chassis mounts. I would make them myself and if you are proficient at welding,do it yourself - the transport dept will probably never even look at them. Unless you tell them they most likely would't know they have been changed.The V8 radiator has the inlet/outlet on opposite ends to the Isuzu one, so you will probably need to source one. The fan shroud is different too so you will need one of these- still available from LR. Does your motor have the cover plate where the ps pump should be. Seems that some Stage 1 motors have the blanking plate and others have a different timing cover with no access for a ps pump. If you have the one with the blanking plate its just a matter of removing this and bolting the ps pump straight on. The pump from a truck motor will fit, just have to modify the hoses to fit. If you need help with any part numbers get in touch.

    Keep us posted as to how you go with this as no one really could give a directly yes or no to my similar question.

    The V8 radiator can be used but you will need to swap over the hose outlets as the Isuzu is the other side.

    OOPS, I just saw its originally an '85 model so compliance won't be an issue.

    Hi Steve, don't know if you were the one I just emailed about P/S graft into a series 3, but the 4BD1 & 6BD1 truck engine came with a close coupled gear driven power steering pump fitted. You need a diesel engine wrecker to source the intermediate timing gear case , cover & pump (Identical on both) . You can make your own gaskets with a sheet if "oilytite" as they cost an arm & a leg from Isuzu. Then a mob like Pirtek or similar pressure hose builder to make the pressure connections between pump& P/S unit.
    B.T.W. whilst you have the engine mounts out, make sure you "break" the edges of the holes, by that I mean remove the sharp edges of the drilled holes in the mounts, particularly if they are genuine mounts. The steel used in the mounts is quite hard & if sharp corners are left around the drilled mount holes, with the 4BD1 vibration, it will eventually either shear the bolt from the engine block, or the head from the bolt. Believe me this happened twice to me after tensioning the bolts with a tension wrench to their required torque. Just touch the sharp edge with a larger diameter drill sufficient only to remove the edge, problem solved. Hope that helps, Bill
