Looking at an Isuzu County 110

    Hi all,
I went and looked at this one last night Message - AULRO Classifieds
and I'm interested in it, but have a few questions:
    1. How much should I budget for the gearbox rebuold and who is recommended to do this job?
    2. From what I read, the Isuzu engines are good for 80kmph comfortably, is there a suggested gearing set up to make it more suitable for highway driving? (I do a fair bit of driving from Adelaide to Melb/Syd/Brisbane with boats on the trailer/roof)
    3. What are other things to lok for in an 85 Defender?
I'll admit that I am still more looking for a 300tdi or td5 defender, but I quite liked the look and simplicity of the older county and the seller seemed like a good guy. Any comments or feedback welcome.

    Cheers

    Hi
    Try these guys,Diff and Trans 8211 8322.
They did a Rangy for me many moons ago.

Thye are in the heart of the city.
Also try triumph rover spares at lonsdale, they would have some exchange units or can get rebuilt done for you.

For long distance towing the big donk be best I would have thought.
My mates swear by it, I don't but lets not start that.

I would also do turbo, without they are very gutless from having driven one before and after.

Rust can be a problem but nothing that can't be fixed by throwing money and or time at it.

They cruise quite happily at 110 and 2500 rpm. If your predominant use is for touring then the 5 speed box makes a much better tourer. 2200 rpm @ 110. On long trips lightly laden mine does 30 mpg.

That'd be the LT85 with the LT230 transfer case, the 4 speed is the LT95 which has integral transfer, and you don't want to look at LT77's even though they are 5 speed boxes

That Isuzu has had quite a lot of work done to bring it into a reliable condition. From here it looks only a matter of having another gearbox fitted & making sure the rust is not serious.
I'm refurbishing - slowly- a 5 speed Isuzu & estimate the cost will be over 10 G's all up, but it will be good for another 300,000klm then.
Also, the extra's add up on the one you are looking at.
    Snorkel $350-450
    Rear Carrier $450-550
    Bullbar $600 +
    Spotties ??
    Custom Exhaust ??
    If I didn't already have 2 Isuzu's I would be interested.

At a glance it looks like a good truck. Wack a turbo on it and you wont regret it. I've owned / own td5 and 300tdi Defender's and V8 County and my turbo Isuzu County is the most satisfying to drive by far. For towing, it's easily the winner, and believe it or not, it's quieter than the 300tdi.

It also looks like it's got the fresh air flaps (therefore is non-air con) which is the better way to go IMHO. Easier to work on in the engine bay and the dash/fascia if you have to fit extras/run wiring etc.

Okay, is anyone using one as their daily driver?
(seems most Isuzu Landie owners also have 3 or 4 other landrovers in their garage)

The LT95 gearbox (4 speed) that is in it is the strongest of all rover boxes, and very easy to come by, all early rangies had this box aswell behind the v8's, its just a simple matter of bellhousing and associated isuzu bits that you have for a changeover.
You can pickup a good box for acouple of hundred dollars, the only problem they have is in the intermeiate gears where the brass shims where. If you can find one then a taper roller bearing kit is recommended.

But that county looks good, fix the box, stick a turbo on it and away you go
