    Slight problem.

I drove over to Wellington yesterday to meet my son, who was bringing the grandkids up for the school holidays. Got back home about lunchtime and shortly after found a pool of coolant spreading around the front, just behind the bullbar.

This morning, pulled the radiator out, and it seems the core itself is leaking. There is no visible damage to it.

Any suggestions as to the best source for a new radiator would be appreciated, preferably in a hurry, and fairly local, as I can't carry three kids around in the 2a ute.

for a pinch just find the damaged core, pinch it off, snap it in half then fold it over a couple of times then solder it up, that will stop it leaking enough to keep you out of trouble till you find a replacement.

if its not a bad leak seperate a couple of eggs and dump the whites into the radiator.

when you get your new radiator you should also replace the thermostat, gasket and inspect all the ally pipe fittings for condition.

Thermostat & gasket recently replaced. I seem to have a problem with thermostats and resultant overcooling. That was the third one I have replaced in the last 400,000km.

Thanks, but my immediate action when the local CRT opens tomorrow is to get some Bar's and see if that stops it, at least temporarily. Then make some phone calls to see what I can track down. You never know - when I broke a rear window in the County there was a new (genuine part) one on the shelf at Scott's in Dubbo - and half the price of anyone else!

    ......
It does not seem to be a single tube, but several pin holes in several tubes - in the middle of the core, so a bit hard to see just what is going on except the general area of the leak. And I am afraid that if I start cutting fins to get access to it, I will start a lot more leaks.

JD , these things always seem to happen at inconvenient times....

I know that around here, if I take a radiator into one of the radiator places in Tamworth or Armidale, they will generally be able to rebuild it in a day - I assume that it's the same in Dubbo

I guess the point at issue is getting it into Dubbo while you're looking after a couple of kids

.... if only I was closer I could take it in for you - is there anyone close by to you who can take it in to Dubbo for you for a recore?

    John,
If time is on your hands & finances tight, the best on offer is a V8 radiator from CLR in Sydney & have your local radiator workshop swap around the fittings- cost me $70 but should be less.
    $420 all up plus freight.

Land rover County/Defender V8 New Radiator - eBay Engine Parts, Engines, Components, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 27-Jul-10 17:00:49 AEST)

If all else fails, chuck two eggs in, some pepper and cover the front till she almost boils. It will get you to Dubbo no worries.

    Yep seconded
We did the same thing, they fit strate up after the fittings have been swapped over, our mate does radiators so we got it done for free

Also bought ours new off ebay, i'm pretty sure they have larger tanks on the v8 rads so they take more coolant

    CHEERS TIM.
