Am looking into a few aspects of the 4BD1/SIIB conversion.
I understand that the 4BD1 has an oil heat exchanger with coolant bypassed from the radiator.
My 4BD1/SIIB will have limited space to increase the frontal area of the radiator and I was wondering if removing the heat exchanger from the oil/coolant system and adding an air/oil heat exchanger in front of the radiator will be any benefit or a disadvantage?
Is it even possible to remove the heat exchanger and to add on an external oil cooler? (With or without thermostatic bypass)

Because the 4BD1 will be running without an engine fan and I'm concerned that with a regular vertical radiator of a series ilk wont have sufficient capacity to keep a 4BD1 pushing around 3 ton cool. So I'm looking for additional cooling options.
If I needn't worry, I wont.

The radiator in the county is similar to a V8 radiator but don't think you'll have a problem. The Isuzu never runs hot even in 40+ degrees summer days.
And 3 ton won't even raise a sweat for a 4BD1.
Perhaps ask the defence guys what the Sigs do. In my day the series FFR's had an oil cooler fitted. Don't know what they do with the perentie.
I have got my 4BD1T to heat twice.
Both times involved the same skifield road, pulling max torque for about 13km of uphill to a max elevation around 2500m.
This is thin air (80% of sealevel density), highest possible load and speeds from 10-60km/h.
Basically it's as bad as things get.
3 ton in a series won't be a problem. My thermo fans don't even run in normal conditions. It takes a slow and steep hill to get them to turn on.
Yes but the radiator in a SIIB is not the same size as the V8 radiator.
To give an example, the SIIB radiator is nestled in between what is the two footwells of the firewall of a 4 cyl Series Land Rover, but shorter because the accellerator linkage sits between the RHS of the radiator and the LHS of the drivers footwell.
The radiator is a 6 cyl Rover type radiator and sits about 600mm - 750mm in front of the engine so the engine fan on the Rover 6 is driven by a drive shaft (which runs through what is the transmission hump on a regular Landy).
I was planning to replace the engine fan/prop shaft with an electric type as fitted to a Holden Commodore. This will save noise from the fan prop shaft arrangement but need to be either on all the time or have a thermo switch in the system.
Does anyone understand the issue of cooling now.

Sounds like heaps of radiator for a 4BD1
the heat exchanger for the oil cooler is inside the engine so takes up no space in front of, behind or adjacent to the radiator
DO NOT REMOVE IT.
IF you do remove or bypass it you wont be cooling the engine oil any more so it will just get hot which breaks it down faster put more heat on the seals and can cause them to leak.
And thats providing whatever you make up to go in place of the cooler doesnt leak mixing your oil with your coolant.
