come on in all fairness there is nothing wrong with a td42, and would do the same thing. the diff-erance (excuse the pun) is the diff pumkin possition in the patrol as to the rover, the rover as them more off-set and the patol rear is more centered.

Agree that the Td42 is as about as legendary as the Nissan gets, BUT it is attached to a soulless and boring vehicle.

Many, many times I have purposely idled along at 3 or 4 rpm() when there are people watching, just to showcase the ultimate torque and beauty of such an engine.
I also do it when I AM on my own, just to feeeellll good

On a trip I did up the Cape some years ago I had the misfortune to have the vacuum actuator stuff up on my LT95 when I was up there. Of course it was in the unlocked position and I really needed 4WD to get out of there. Steep rutted pebbly ironestone ridges to cross and then about 16K of beach driving alone with no other vehicles to assist. I was towing my No 5 trailer and had a fair load on - as I expected the ridges pulled me up with no front wheel drive. Rather than pull the actuator off and manually lock it I decided to use the winch to get me over the ridge as there were a few small trees within range. With the gearbox in low 1st, engine idling and the PTO winch engaged I was able to get out and stand in front helping the winch rope feed properly onto the spool. It was so easy and the motor didnt even seem like it had any load at all and was going that slow that you could walk back, adjust the steering wheel and then go back to the winch. Pulled itself out effortlessly. The beach work was no problem even with the cd unlocked.

A friend of mine has recently purchased a 3.0 Pootrol We went out a couple of weeks ago for a play in the forest, all was going well for him until we came to a rather steep step about 4' high.

Yes, I challenged him to get up this bank on tickover only He watched in amazement as the county crawled up and over and then it was his turn. On his first attempt the vehicle stalled, and the second and third, he then gave it a bit of welly and got nothing but wheelspin. Eventually he did get up the bank, but it seemed to have no low down grunt.

Similar situation on the CREB Track recently, but it was so slippery, I had problems getting round to adjust the steering wheel, then back to the spool. You had to climb around the vehicle, using it for support, while it was moving up a reasonably steep incline, otherwise you'd slip over and get left behind. I was scrambling, but the Isuzu made it to the top without a second glance. I'm gonna bring chains next time.

Shame they didn't make the TD42 direct injection.
