The optical tacho is just an optical counter. You stick a piece of reflective tape on the harmonic balancer and point the tacho at it. Displays in RPM.
Not sure where the voltmeter gets its feed from, but probably from the battery voltage. Regardless, its DC. To trigger one of these tachos you need either AC or an on/off pulse. Only way to get that from the standard alternator is to tap one of the windings in the alternator before it goes through the diodes.
The other option I know of on the 4bd1 is the Isuzu sensor that mounts into the bottom of the injection pump and an Isuzu tacho.
