G'day All, I contacted a person in a local (Hexham NSW) Isuzu dealership/spares parts etc, told him that I needed to know price & availability of a engine rebuild kit for my 1984 4BD1 engine as fitted to L/Rover of the day.
He asked if I had the engine No, which I did and gave to him, he rang me back about 10 minutes later, telling me that 'mate thats a old engine' we will need more details than just an engine number, can you give me anything off a ?? data plate??, I said the vehicle is 85k's from where I am, and that I wasn't sure if there were any data plates on the engine.
I know that there are 2 different length of skirts on pistons= 104.2mm long the other 98mm (info from fellow AULROIAN's LOL) I'm reasonably confident that mine are 104.2mm type, but until the engine comes out I will not know for certain.
Without sounding like I'm putting the person who spoke to me down, I have always been under the impression that (apart from 4BD1 T engines) all the 4BD1's were identical, can anyone enlighten me, cheers Dennis
ps off to work soon, on nights for the next 2, n day shift Sunday so I might not get back here quickly,,.

You would be sadly mistaken. There were lots of small variations over the years. 4BD1(T)s were used in a huge range of different applications and with different rated outputs. They also changed the cam and injectors on 4BD1(T)s in 86-88.
ALL the info you need is on here - you just need to search!!! (or just ask Dougal).
As I said previously, get the short skirt alfin pistons.
I was told by my isuzu place to ask for parts for an ISUZU NPR59, however 4BD1 RBG is probably more correct.
G'day All, I was about to shut down this computer when I noticed replies, Thank You both, I did ring Zenith in Brisbane about 10 days ago only to be told by the chap who answered the phone, we dont do parts for old engines or something along those lines,I was a bit taken back by that response as another AULRO user told me to call them as well.
I will try and call back with the other info re NPR59 etc cheers and Thanks Dennis

while theres lots of small changes over the period the original engine delt with, dont stress too much about the internal ones... all the minor changes are compatible with each other.
think of it like series gearboxes, yes there are some changes within the range that wont just drop straight in BUT if you change the damaged bit and the bit that it wont just do a drop in mesh with you can keep using the same casing and all the other bits.

funny you should say this denis because im pretty sure it was the dealers at hexam i priced a full rebuild kit from them from memory it cost around the $1300 mark also found in my travels that a nitrided 4bd1t crank was $100 cheaper than the standard 4bd1 crank for some reasonthey are strange to deal with at isuzu because once they find out its not for a truck and its for a landy they just about hang up
.... what is the reason for doing a rebuild may i ask ? i considered rebuilding mine before turboing at 380,000k's but took the punt and turboed it without rebuilding because the engine was in great condition still
now running 20psi and enough power to put almost any toyota to shame but on the other hand it has cost alot of money worth of guages and time just to keep an eye on things
