4BE1 fitted with 4BD1 crank and rods = 3.9 litres.
Or just bolt a turbo to it and ignore the missing 10% displacement. Being shorter stroke it should be a little smoother.
"This motor would match up age wize to the D1 mid 90s and should be fairly easy. Being smaller than the 3.9 they fitted to an earlier model with lesser brakes".
The 4BD1 and the 4BE1 are exactly the same size externally - they are interchangeable.
There was a Rangie in Brisbane that had a 4BE1 fitted - it went well and afaik was on carsales recent;ly

My brother has a 1996 D1 with a 4BD1 in it. The conversion was done by the PO and blueplated in QLD in December 2006. Both registered and insured - not sure if this is before or after "the legislation" changed tho.
As it so happens, my brother was kind enough to lend it to me while my 120's off the road, so I've just stepped outside for a few snaps.
I have to say the 4BD1 / R380 combination in the Disco is soo much more comfy than my 120 with the LT95. Not nearly as practical for long trips tho (or as much character)!!!
Let me know if you want any more details.
Cheers

I know it's not an Isuzu. But if you fitted one of these:

We would forgive you. Especially the 200kw 3.2 litre one.![]()
Styer looks impresive, I get the feeling I'd have to sell my house to get one thow

Gazz,
The conversion was done by the PO (i.e. previous owner), so I don't know how difficult it was to convert, however all seems to fit well.
As for long trip practicality, nothing wrong with disco's (they're more comfortable in fact) but IMHO, defenders are better suited to outback travel. Boxy body is great for loading + gives a commanding view of the truck from the seating position, modular body panels make it easier to work on, modify etc etc...
... and now the real reason - I can't fit one of these on the Disco!
