help needed some kind of fueling problem

i have an 1985 110 county and it's the 4bd1 turbo and recently it has been splattering and dieing in the worst spots for example THE GATEWAY BRIDGE ! 1st i thought is was dirty diesel clogging the lines or the filter so i replaced the main filter it ran ok till the next Thursday until it stoped right before the gateway bridge ! but lucky there was still so side of the road to stop at.

i then followed the fuel line and found a pre filter next to a little fuel pump in front of the back tyre. it was a little cartridge filter that went in side a little blue bowl, and i also drained the tank and gave it a good flush, but is still has been stopping ! when it stops i have been cracking the injector lines and pumping and there seems to be air in it, and it tacks for ever to pump it. then it will stop again and i do the same thing and there is still air in it and it will not pump out !

i have no idea what it could be now, i hope it is not the injector pump or anything ! any ideas would be awesome !

How full is the fuel tank when it dies?

I had a series LR that developed a split/hole in he fuel pick up. It would run well until the fuel level dropped to the level of the split. It would then suck air instead of fuel.

Regardless, check the fittings on the fuel line for air intrusion.

start with the rubber seals on the fuel water seperator, its unlikely to be them but it is sometimes.

then check the hand priming pump, if thats spurting diesel out then it can also be letting air IN...

now check the secret hidden filter no bugger remembers, its in the large union fitting that leads into the lift pump once youve found it and changed it you may feel free to refer to it as the fuel filter I remember but never want to change again.

finally once all thats done prime and start the engine, once its got oil pressure hold it pinned and then crack open the fuel line INTO the fuel filter, if you have air there then the air leak is prior to the injector pump.

dont forget that you should also check and seal all the unions and taper threads on the fuel system from the tank onwards (I use loctite 567)

and thats all the primary air in the fuel system issues sorted.

    G'day All,
I have to agree with Dave on point No3, it would have to be the worst place to have a filter, and I'm telling you, if you have fat fingers your gonna love doing it LOL, been there done that, anyway mate hope you get it sorted soon, cheers Dennis

Here is the evidence that this vehicle was a V8 oriiginally. Remove that fuel pump and filter etc, and fit a CAV filter and water trap in its place. I bet this is the source of the air leak.

The little filter under the injector pump base is a pain to get to.

and yes it was a v8 and has a fuel pump and pre filter in front of the back tyre are you suggesting i get rid of the pump ? and just have a filter there and have a CAV filter with water separator under the bonnet, cause at the moment i don't have a water separator

This is the standard sediment bowl for Isuzu Counties isn't it, not the filter etc that the V8s had?

Get rid of the old petrol fuel pump and filter - they don't allow the lift pump to work efficiently and could be where air is getting into the lines.

Your are courting disaster with a capital $$$$ by not running a sedimentor (water trap) with a diesel engine. It should be located in the line between the tank and lift pump.

The inlet pipe (from the fuel tank) attaches to the lift pump with a 'banjo' bolt. There is a gauze strainer inside the banjo bolt. The engine mount leaves very little room to allow removal of the banjo bolt to inspect/clean the filter.
