    Best turbo option

I have a 4BE1, and wish to turbo it sometime soon.
What are the best turbo options?
I have been told the TD5 works well, as it spools up early.
    Any other options rec'd?
    Cheers Dave

We talked to the boss man at Turboglide in Wollongong, he recomended the wastegated Garrett T25 as it spooles up at lower reves than the larger turbos, he supplys the turbo with the boost set to 9psi, I modified the pushrod and adjusted the fueling a bit, added a high flow intercooler, we now run 19psi.

The turbo kicks in early, mechanic friends are surprised that they don't feel or hear the turbo wind up, it's seamless in operation.

We're very happy with the 4BD1 intercooled turbo setup, now all we need is to get it running a bit quieter.

For a basic setup I think the best value turbo is a 2nd hand Garrett T28, then a T25, both with the wastegate actuator disabled. Both are very available as ricer drivers frequently upgrade.

New both would a good choice along with the GT versions and the IHI RHB6.

    Thanks for the info.
Just a quick question, why would the waste gate require to be disabled?

Disabling the wastegate lets the turbo build more boost. This works fine until you hit the flow limits of the turbine, which doesn't happen unless you're doing high boost and high rpm.

The TD5 turbo is a GT2052S, it is the modern replacement of the old T25. They will give heaps down low but will choke around 3000rpm. This will not be a good match for the 3000rpm at 100km/h gearing you posted in the other thread.

For boost, 9psi is what you run on an idi toyota engine with a weak head. I suggest 15psi as a starting point. You can run 15psi without an intercooler, but past that intercoolers are necessary.
Fitting intercooler pipes into the front of a RRC will involve a fair bit of cutting. That's one of the reasons I haven't done it yet.

I moved the radiator, electric fans, etc back towards the motor about 80mm and made some brackets to hold everything in place.

The intercooler is secured as far forward as I could with the pipes going down the front of the crossmember and 90 degree silicon elbows turning towards the rear, I used about 64mm diameter approx exhaust pipe for all the straight bits, and more silicon elbows to turn everything back up to the motor.

The gap from the top front frame and the radiator's new position was filled in using some stainless sheet folded to fit, the cowling around the fan needed cutting down near the motor so it fitted in place again.
