    The Wolf 110 4BD1T

I have, in the last week bought and picked up a 1988 4bd1t 110 ute.

as you can see the firewall is beyond repair, but other than that there isn't any rust to complain about. Just about everything works, it has power steering (my first car with it!) and a compressor, but no tank. gear box feels great (5spd - lt77?) and low range and cdl work excellently. Can't hear anything over the rattle of the slide window behind the seats.

The engine, a bit dirty, but starts almost instantly. The bloke i got it off said the turbo needed new seals as it ****ed out oil, so had bypassed it. i assume this is why it blows a bit of smoke, fueled for the turbo but its disconnected?

There are some sketchy jobs on the engine and i will eventually replace them. there is a bit of exhaust leaking from that hole on top of the turbo, and i assume that is the bypass that the previous owner used (top right of turbo, right angled pipe off it), looks like it is meant to be part of the turbo anyway, is it a dump valve or something? (never had a turbo before), and looks as though that lever on top of the exhaust should have a spring or something on it? a bit hard to see, will go and take more pics later.

and as i don't have time to start taking it apart untill after exams, i thought i should test it out around the property.

already got it bogged going through a creek. had to pull it out with my series 3, no one to help, so idle 1st gear low range in both cars and dash between the two to steer. great success!

The plan is to either keep it as a single cab ute (I have possibly got access to a defender firewall will minimal rust), otherwise i have a series 3 ffr with a wrecked engine and gbox, but good body, so would dress the 110 up as a s3 ffr. (This idea spawned the name The WOLF from wolf in sheeps clothing).

The hardest part of this i would think, is making the series 3 firewall fit (6cyl). Has anyone done this? What are the main differences? Just the transmission tunnel? I assume there will be other smaller differences.

Where is the extra inch from the 109 to 110? front or rear wheel arch?

I have more questions, but save them for later.

    cheers

Well done on the purchase. To answer some questions:

What you have is actually a 120 - which as the name suggests has a 120" wheelbase. If you look underneath you will see a 10" extension in the middle of the chassis. They are badged a 120, but everyone calls them a 120. So you have a difference of 11" !

The gearbox will be an LT85 5-speed.

Firewall - the main difference is the transmission tunnel, plus a few brackets for fittings, etc (e.g. door stops). You could certainly turn a S3 firewall into a 110 firewall by grafting on the 110 tunnel and any other needed bits. So yes with a MIG or TIG welder you can make it fit.

Turbo - that is dodgy! Looks like the turbo has an external wastegate the wastegate has been left open and the turbo oil feed disconnected. Driving it like that will be strangling both your air intake and exhaust.

120 you say? looks like it is staying a single cab. just as well as i got my hands on that fire wall, just have to take it off the defender.

yeah i thought it was pretty sketchy. will leave it to sit for a few more weeks then start fixing things like that. can you tell what sort of turbo it is? or where would the number be so i can get parts for it. and do i need that wastegate? or could i just put a blanking block on it? but as it is it has more go than my diesel hilux it will replace, cant wait to have it running well!

Can't tell what turbo (Dougal may be able to?) - looks like a big old Rayjay turbo I udes to own...

Garrett and many other turbos have a tag on the centre section with an ID number. Either way though, I think you should be able to do better - i.e. I think you will be better off getting a 2nd hand or new turbo instead of rebuilding that one.

Alrighty then. will have to look into new/2nd hand turbos. If i go to the trouble of a new one i may as well inter-cool it as well.

also just got given an almost new set of coopers stt's stoked

Gee, I hope the turbo isn't still forcing air in, as he has connected the crankcase / rocker cover breather to the pressure side of the intake system...

no the turbo doesn't spin. yeah he said he had disconnected it. might reconnect it to see how bad the oil leak is. might be something simple.

yep sure is an extra bit of chassis there.
why did they lengthen them? was it just the Australian ones? different prop shaft to the 110 i would assume?

Be careful with that.. if the oil leaks into the inlet it may run away.............
