Is there a heavier clutch than the 'Turbo' clutch

    G'day All,
There is a N/A pressure plate and a 'Turbo' pressure plate, but what else is available ? Did the 6x6's have a heavier clutch ? I'm talking about Land Rover Isuzu pressure plates with an Lt95, not truck clutches.

    This is why I ask..........

When I did my turbo Isuzu conversion I originally installed a standard N/A clutch and pressure plate, because I already had one. It was brand new, so I thought I'd give it a go with the turbo motor. After a short time I started to get some clutch slip under moderate load, for example, third or fourth gear up a reasonably steep hill, just on the road under normal conditions.
So I installed a 'turbo' pressure plate and, although not as bad, I got the same result.
By the way, I checked the pedal/master cylinder adjustments as per the manual.
After a while it all came good, so I assumed the clutch plate just needed 'bedding in' to get more surface contact.
The strange thing is, over the last 40,000kms I have long periods where everything is good and I can't slip the clutch, even if I try, then all of a sudden the clutch will slip again under firm acceleration.
Last weekend I towed a heavy trailer to the 4WD Show and the clutch is slipping worse than it has before, still quite drivable, but can't put the foot down too much in 3rd or 4th.

    Cheers, Murray

Cant help with other clutch types, but FWIW I'm running the truck turbo pressure plate (pretty sure its the number in the parts sticky thread), and the LR clutch plate for Isuzu's (not just a standard LT95 plate).

Our camper isn't super heavy - only about 1.5T, but definitely shows no sign of clutch slip.

Did you replace the slave cylinder when you did the conversion? If not, I wonder if its sticking slightly somehow and leaving pressure on the clutch plate. Maybe rust on the air side of the piston?
Thinking outside the box, maybe something at the pedal/master end that's not letting it release properly (insulation material etc).
The fact that it's not consistent suggests that its not a purely clutch plate issue. Contamination, glazing, or insufficient clamp pressure wouldn't come and go like you're experiencing.

Edit: when I was getting prices for mine, the genuine Isuzu clutch kits were pretty well priced. The kit wasn't that much dearer than just the pressure plate by itself. I didn't get one as I had no use for an Isuzu friction plate - but you might

Do you have anyone who can reset pressure plates to higher clamping force?

The turbo pressure plate is the same one that is fitted to the 6X6. Maybe if you contact aftermarket clutch manufacturers (Exedy etc) they may be able to build a heavier pressure plate. Possibly you can have yours uprated if you can find someone with the right gear to do it.

    slipping

Are you certain the thrust race is not picking up on the shaft. Mine slipped after getting stuck in very fine silty mud. I then cut an inspection cover in the bellhousing so I could lube the bearing on the shaft, no more slipping. That was an N/A clutch & PP. Turbo, 35's and towing camper.

Must admit after fitting the truck box and clutch the old unit looked very shagged, especially the pressure plate surface had two huge high points which had turned dark blue.

    Murray,

I am onto a second Turbo clutch, it now slips at towing duties in top gear.
There are these guys, Xtreme Clutch Catalogue this is a great clutch I just fitted one to a 4BD1T 130 DC and is still going well. Has 1.2t clamping force but pedal is pretty good, actually feels not much heavier than my Isuzu turbo plate.
They will make you a custom clutch too, $$ are the only limit

I am however going back to Auto again for other reasons, mostly physical

It's a while ago, but I think I fitted a Holden V8 one tonner HD clutch and pressure plate - it wasn't a standard HD pressure plate - a mate working for Repco found it for me. The spline was the same, I had to drill and tap the flywheel to suit and can't remember what I did to the throw out bearing carrier to get the position right. Abused the crap out of it until the Isuzu died. It was in there for 15-16 years and probably 200 000k.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I intend to fit TRB's sometime soon. Although I know it can be done with the gearbox in the car, it might be worth dropping the box to check everything out regarding the clutch.
We're going to Cape York in July so it's all gotta be good by then.

plenty of time to stick the truck box in. We were supposed to be going in july, but due to work, and work getting in the way from finishing my car, and a new apprentice, and another apprentice starting soon, i'm staying home. oh, you should just stick the truck box and big clutch in, did i mention that earlier
