Stage 1 Reverse lamp Enable Relay

I couldn't find any specific information on the wiring of the Oil Pressure Warning light on the Stage 1 (mine stayed on permanently). So if anyone is interested in the twisted logic read on.

The Oil Pressure Switch is located on the rear right hand side of the 4BD1 block (see the image below). The switch is normall Open Circuit with no oil pressure and closes when oil pressure is sensed.

The Oil Pressure Switch is in the coil circuit of a relay (the Reverse Lamp Enable Relay) which has two separate contacts for the oil warning light (normally closed) and the reverse lamp (normally open).
When no oil pressure is sensed the relay is OFF, the oil warning light is on (if the ignition is also on) and the reversing lamp is disabled.
When oil pressure is sensed the relay is ON, the oil warning light goes off and the reverse lamp circuit is enabled (but the reverse lamp will only come on if the reversing switch is also ON).

All of this just so we don't flatten the battery if we have reverse gear selected - Hmmmm.

One thing to note, on my Stage 1, which I think is original, the 12V supply to the relay coil and the reverse lamp circuit are not switched by the ignition switch - yes, permanent 12V. That was a bit of a surprise.

BTW, my fault, faulty earth to the Oil Pressure Switch (who would have thought that on a Landy?).

Circuit and photos of the relay and oil pressure switch are attached.

    Cheers
    Pete

    rare relay?

That relay configuration would not be easy to find at the usual car retail places.
In your drawing, for the earth wire that you marked as Bk, If it is the one colour black the identifying tag should be B.

Bk is Black with a Pink trace, using a trace in the earth wire usually means that the wire is switched, the other wire on the switch then is to earth and would be the one colour black B.

Does anyone have a work shop manual with the circuit diagram for that particular model Land Rover?

Yes Arthur, you're right, I should have used the standard Land Rover colour code. BK does mean solid black. For that matter, GN is solid grean and BN is solid brown. I should have also noted that the 12V supply to the Oil Warning Light is switched (via Ignition), the other 12V is not.

I can see all non-stage1 users glazing over...

A bit off track but anywhere other than landrover we can get replacement switches from? Mines snapped off.
