car starts no problem have never used the heater plugs. Runs smooth upto 3200 it gets a bit strained at 3400. If i floor the accelerator two or three times i get a bit of smoke a bit of a blue tinge. If I take it smoothly up 3200 and hold it fo 15 seconds no smoke at all. Compression is 500 psi after 4 revolutions without starting and 610 to 620 on all 4 cylinders with engine running. All seems fine but top speed in 5th gear is max 100kph 2000 rpm. So i cannot figure out why i cannot get higher revs 2500 in top would should give me 125 kph. 120 would be nice.

Should be more than 100... I easily get 120+ in my non turbo, and with the old gearing it would creep up over 135 if I wasnt paying attention.

    mmmmm motor seems perfect..
you said that accelerator cable is adjusted correctly didnt you?

all thats left is a tad more fuel but then egt guage is required... all thats left then is your gearing may not be standard ?? forgive me if you have covered this already...

Speedo is vdo electronic and speed confirmed with gps. Front diff is original but rebuilt. Rear axle is from a 130 with Salisbury. Still comes back to why I can get 3000 rpm + in 1,2 and 3 but only 2400 in 4 and 2000ish in 5. How can I check gearing would it be rotate wheel and count number of turns on prop.

Oh dear it's not speedo then LOL
Um as for checking yes just do the count method with wheel jacked off the ground...I'm not sure what my rpm is in 4th or 5th all I know is with 35's ,3.54diff etc etc I'm hooning along if I feed it some fuel i now forget what a non turbo Isuzu feels like so I cannot comment to much...all I can say that's left now is get the injector nozzles checked and pressures reset or fit a turbo ... There are some that claim to sit on 140k's all day (not sure on revs) in a NA Isuzu but I would not like to see 0-100 times for it though

Adjust the fuel screw. Don't overthink these engines, your fuel delivery is fine, your timing should be fine if you have no difficulty and no white smoke starting, your compression is fine it just needs more fuel. If it doesn't blow any smoke at hard throttle now, then this will make ALL the difference. A NA diesel just needs a little more fuel, don't go crazy half a turn (Out) will do for starters.
I have done this with a few NA engines and it doesn't take a lot of adjusting to help it go much better. Fuel economy surprisingly stayed about the same as they weren't having their neck wrung at every hill....

injectors serviced last month all good. Tried half turn on weekend no obvious difference. I assume more fuel is anti clocwise on the screw will try a bit more up tto full turn see what happens. What's the likely effect on too much fuel.

Well it sure is weird then !!! As for fuel if it is sustained for a period of time at an unsafe amount of fuel then things will turn out bad for your motor and your pocket...
