Yeah I was very surprised...as we have discussed it was in an excavator and the owner decided to drive it through a river and hydraulic locked it but by the looks of it they removed 2 glow plugs (on the incorrect cylinders) and decided to throw away the motor...I took the head off last night and found that all have had moisture in them but number 1 was very bad.
Everyone suggested the motor is shagged and would have bent a rod but when I pulled the con rods and pushrods out they all seem fine as you would know they are just over engineered.
The bolts holding the bearing caps on are extremely well made with unique anti rotation slots rolled into them, compare them to a modern chev motor and everything is so much better/larger.
I'm not sure if the blue springs mean anything but with certain 6BG models the blue valve springs indicate no valve rotator.

Is that valve gear heavier than 4bd1 (I'm thinking maybe bigger capacity == larger valves == heavier rockers etc)?

I'm not sure.... I would like to compare both for you however I am heading out west tomorrow and will not get a chance to check until Tuesday the 4th sorry

nice... stuff - do you know how many hours it had worked for prior to the hydraulic?

and how long it has been since it happened?

looks great from the pics (not that you can see everything)...

Unfortunately no I do not know how many hours work it has had but all I know is its a 2002 model and there is not much wear on any of the usual wear places I also do not know how long it has been sitting there but it looks like it was removed at the engine mounts and everything left on the motor such as alternator etc etc and thrown on a pallet in a workshop...
It is going through a full rebuild once I fully inspect the crank.

I will be posting as many pics as possible of what I do to this jigger

Apart from the swamp on top of the pistons, it's looking very clean.

    Are the rods all straight?

Yeah it's looking very clean the rod seem to be straight however I will be checking for any bows or twists on a flat bed and even though the pushrods are very long they seem straight to....the only part for concerns is it looks to be a mark on main journal 4 which is from where a bit of water has seeped in under the bearing however I am hoping it is more of a stain than an indent...I will take some high definition pics so everyone can see but I thinkimay be worrying to much.

    Quick update...
Well I have fully dismantled the motor to find some not so pleasant surprises I found that 3 of the 4 rods are bent one being that bent it snapped the skirt, belted the bore with the rod and shortened it by that much the crank's counterweights rubbed the bottom of the piston

At the moment the crank is away getting checked for run out and polished if everything is found to be fine i will continue with the project...
I have made a critical mistake while dismantling and that was following advice from others that suggested to run a stick welder down the bores to shrink the sleeves and not follow my gut feeling to use a puller a slip in concentration allowed it to arc across to the deck beside the fire ring on #1 as I pulled the stick out so dont do this

As I've been told by a certain person it's an expensive welding table thanks Dougal

So I then proceeded to make this

    Worked a treat

Very impressed with the rod cap bolts quality

I priced new rods anyone wanna have a guess at the cost ?
I was considering custom rods until I was advised standard would probably be better...
