    Correct Oil Pressure Range

    Hi guys,

I'm looking at buying an oil pressure gauge for my 4BD1 (now turbo). As you probably know, there are several pressure ranges available. Can anyone tell me what I should expect to see on the gauge at idle (hot and cold) and at max revs?

I run a smiths capillary (mechanical) gauge.
cold I run around 60-70psi at idle when I've been flogging it around for the day idle is around 20psi but when driving it increases back upto 60psi...

nominal pressure is about 65 PSI....

I would be getting a gauge that handles 10-80Psi. if its under 10 its time to be worried.

I got worried as my oil pressure would drop below 10psi if it was a hot day , I was giving it a hard time (110* engine temp , 750-800* exhaust) I then found the problem was due to the IP playing up down low which effected idle speed down to the point where the engine rpm is right on the stall mark (whatever that is if factory idle is around 750) mine must have been that low it dropped oil pressure however quick tap of the throttle and 40-60psi instantly occurred ...

Also another interesting demonstration of heat effecting oil pressure.. As previously said I use a smiths oil pressure gauge and I also use a smiths water temp gauge both cappilary type and when i sit at idle with thermo fan off I can watch the temp gauge slowly rise and oil pressure slowly drop, flick the thermo on I will then see the temp fall and the pressure rise just thought I would share my temp vs oil viscosity findings

Not only heat effects oil pressure. When my beast fires up and the oil is still cold and thick it idles around 60-70 psi and when you get the revs up it is over 100 psi. Does drop fairly quick to the normal 30 psi at idle and the 65 psi when the motor is above idle. Oil I use in pretty standard shell rimular or the like. The higher oil pressure has broken to two cheaper 100 psi Chinese oil gauges. Have now a better 150 psi gauge and all is good.

That is correct... Mine does not hit 100psi unfortunately it gets about 80-85 but it's just under 400k on the clock so I'm happy still ...I use shell rimulaX I find it quite good and obviously a lot cheaper than the castrol 5w 30 sport edge I run in my puma (of course those 2 oils are designed for different applications though)
