Newbie - looking for Landy models with 4bd1

    Greetings,
I'm not familiar with the Landrover models/history etc. I am looking for a Landrover 110 with the 4bd1 or 4bd1t motor fitted as standard here in Australia. My question is what are the models and years to look for? I tried looking through the forum but I couldn't find much information. Can anyone point me to a good source?

I guess that any landrover with this motor is of interest to me. I live in south west WA.

    Thanks in anticipation

1982-1984 If you are happy with leaf springs.
    1984-1990 if you want coils.

There were also a batch of military landies made after those dates AFAIK, but don't hold your breath for the army to sell them...

Pretty much all the factory 110's were non-turbo (but one can be added without too much trouble).

Only the stage 1 series 3, 110's and 120's were factory fitted with the 4bd1.. but people have successfully put them into classic rangies, discos and forward controls.

Most people refer to the 110s as a 'County' as this was written down their side - but technically this is only a trim level (like the Range Rover Vogue)

    4bd1

flagg and isuzurover, thankyou both for this. It will help me look. I have found a 1993 defender with a 200tdi. May be ok although I'll look for a 4bd1.

    Cheers

Another thing with the 80's 110/stage 1 is that the aluminium is thicker on the panels, making it tougher to damage...

The 4BD1 is also literally twice the motor the 200tdi is, with very similar economy, add a turbo and you are good for 800k km+ ;-) my 88 is barely run in with 420k km...

The 4BD1 was fitted to the Series 3 Stage 1 as an alternative to the V8, dates as noted above, and then fitted to Landrover 110, station wagon with County trim, full length hardtop, ute (rare), and trayback (usually with an extended 120" wheelbase), up to 1990. A large fleet of military 110s was fitted with them in the same period, with some later, and a significant number also have been remanufactured recently to new condition.

Over the same period, the 4BD1T was fitted to a much smaller number of military and civilian 110 6x6s (civilian ones now very rare, no military ones yet released). There may have been a very few 4x4 110s factory fitted with 4BD1Ts.

Turbo conversions are not uncommon and relatively easy. Quite a few 110 V8s have been converted to 4BD1(T), this being relatively easy, although the bell housing and flywheel housing and a few other bits are fairly hard to find.

To clarify a common misnomer, the term "County" is often used to refer to Landrover 110s, as the most common version in Australia was the wagon with County Trim, which included the word "County" in large letters on the front door.

The nomenclature "Landrover 110" was replaced in 1990 by "Landrover Defender 110" with no essential change although it coincided with dropping the V8 and 4BD1 and replacing them with the 200Tdi. It also represented the virtual end of Australian Manufacture of Landrovers.
