Thread: compound turbo set up

All you blokes sound like geniuses to me. I'm not that smart so I was going to put a supercharger on my isuzu. But turns out it wont work like I hoped. Bottom pulley is going to be too large to get the boost. So what type of turbo would I be looking at to get around 10-15 psi boost and comes in at a fairly low rev.

There have been a number of discussions on here about why superchargers aren't such a good thing for a diesel (and nothing to do with pulley sizes etc), so its probably good that you've decided to go with a turbo instead.

There are LOTS of "which turbo" threads around here - so do a search and spend a few hours reading.
If you want a low cost, proven solution then something like this would be a good starting point.

as steve said there is so many options and has been a lot of threads about these options on what turbo to use...id go with something around the gt22-25 mark or a gt2260v or gt2560v (vnt's)

Thanks for the help. Was going to put a clutch pulley on the top that is why the bottom pulley was going to be to large. This seems to be the only way of stopping the uneven idle of the diesel from destroying the insides of the super charger. But anyway not going down that track now.

    Compound Autopsy

    Ok
finally had the time to dismantle the set up and investigate.

What I found was the air cleaner just wasn't big enough for the job. Under full boost it could not supply enough air, hence it starting pulling the oil through the turbo ,s looking for air!!!!!!!Seeing as we have absolutly no more room for a big arse air cleaner its back to a single turbo.

So my ol mate in china has sent me a nice little unit for a 4BD2 which I will run untill I can rebuild one of the VNT's that a kind benefactor has donated

Wont be untill next year untill after our business is up and running.

Bad news there Justin I have also been contemplating a larger air cleaner but as you said there is just not enough room under the bonnet ...

I am running a 100 series landcruiser element in my own home-built housing to give enough room.
The filter is capable of more, but I need to graft bigger inlet and outlet tubes in. My Donaldson Informer pulls almost into the red with 24psi boost and not revving over 3000.

    Yep same here

My Donaldson was tripping into the red at 18psi boost with the compound set up. I think a much bigger unit with 4" min inlet & outlet would do it, but that would mean an external bonnet mount etc. no thanks

Can you try your donaldson with the cover open for a run and see what it reads? If that helps, then a bigger inlet will be the go.

Your outlet should be reasonably okay. Mine is 2.5" and a tight 90 to clear the bonnet.
When I eventually get the 93 body on with EAS towers I should have some more room.

Is it the inlet/outlet diameter restricting the air or the air filter element itself not large enough too ? Who runs the tiny internal element inside the large one out of curiosity?
