    4bd1 into 1995 defender..should I ?

I've have an opertunity to get a 1995 defender with the 300 motor. I also have my trusty stage 1 4bd1 that I was thinking of moving on if I was to get it....but then I got to thinking I should maybe put the isuzu in the defender. What do you recon? What is involved? is there anything to gain?

Nope, absolutely nothing to gain at all.

In fact I'm such a good bloke I'll arrange for the Isuzu to be picked up and taken off your hands with no cost to you as it's totally unnecessary for you now.

Any rumours that it may become turboed and end up in a late '98 Tdi 'fender would be totally unfounded......

in fact it would be illegal for you to do so.

As its an older diesel it doesn't meet the pollution standards required and the emissions are actually carcinogenic. There's special exemptions for people who have to use these and so far as I know the only organisation thats got it is the defence.

While Rick is being very noble in his offer, moving the 4bd1 onto anyone who hasnt had this training would be not only be unethical but illegal under the current WHS umbrellas.

As I've had the training (being a mechanic for the ADF) I'll happily put your mind at ease by taking it off your hands.

Yes do it and no it shouldn't be illeagle to convert a 95 defender. I'm actually doing the conversion now with a 130 and from my research with engineers who will sign off on it, they say you can put the 4bd1 into a defender up to 2002 when the emission regs changed. So you can actually convert an early td5 if you wish. Having the stage 1 will make it easier as you have all the bits needed bits. Major thing is welding on the new engine mounts but not too hard. Just make sure you factor in a turbo!

    Hey Woza,

I suggest you do your own research regarding your engine swap. Remember the 4BD1t ran through to 98 in commercial vehicles here in Oz. There is some truth in the matter however if your happy to turbo it you'll be fine in most states & territories.

You need to get an engineers advise, if you lived in QLD I could give you the number of 2 engineers that would pass it. I have a 92' with a 4BD1, no issues here!

    Cheers, Tristan

P.S All exhaust emissions are carcinogenic! Particulate matter or not.

    What a load of rubbish,
The only place in Australia you can fit a 4bd in a defender is South Australia, Magill to be more accurate.
In fact because of the asbestos in these motors they can kill you while just sitting on a pallet in your garage. that’s why the ADF aren’t selling them.
But for a small fee and if you pay the shipping I can sort it all out for you MATE

    Now that’s Tone

Yes completely missed it! I was just trying to answer the question and give the bloke some advice and confidence that it's a good idea. If read a bit quickly things can be understood the wrong way which would be unfortunate. I had people tell me that it would be illeagle but luckily I did my own research, mabe I missed their tone too! I love a good sence of humor but sometimes facts are useful too. I guess we are not ment to believe all we read I spose! Cheers, Andrew.

What? I guess I also miss understand internet, but just incase. Defence sells asbestos containing material all the time. Just go along to a Bandiana auction sometime, Asbestos stickers on lots of bits!

Yes they are selling Land Rover right now and some will contain known asbestos materials, DNSDC ( Sydney ). If you are concerned you will need to read part 4 of the of the GM120, there are very specific entries as to what has been replaced with non-asbestos parts.

Sorry if I miss understood your post "85 County"

    Cheers, Tristan
