Just as a footnote to this thread - the original problem is likely to have resulted from excessive current draw due to a poor earth connection - in my case the engine/chassis link.
Worth checking (check for measurable voltage between the starter frame and the negative terminal when the starter is operated). Mine is a Nippon-Denso starter, and only needed several sets of contacts in the solenoid before I found the real problem.

FWIW I called Ashdown Ingram today and they said the 12V 4BD1 starter has been discontinued, without replacement.
