Thanks JC, that's probably the noise that I had in my original motor at around those K's that I could never find. annoyed the crap out of me for awhile but it never got worse so I learned to live with it![]()
For ages I have been putting up with a tappet type noise from the Suzi. It was very minor, just irritating.
Last service I decided well 24 months is a while since the last tappet clearance check, better have a squiz.
What I found was, nothing. All clearances were withing a few thou of one another, BUT there was excessive endfloat on the 2 furthest rocker arms...
This was most likely the problem I thought; as they move up and down they also move along the rocker shaft and back, clacking against the pedestal and spacer.
I found a great fix for mine.
Remove rocker shaft and disassemble carefully. Insert 1 300Tdi valve spring washer next to each of those rocker arms (The thin one between the valve spring and the head) which in my case just happened to be exactly the right ID and thickness to retain a small amount of endfloat.
Reassemble and enjoy the serenity again.
This engine has seen 600,000km. The rocker shaft still looks like new, and wipes clean with just your finger, shiny clean

I reckon you are spot on JC as I though it was tappet related but after checking them a couple of times and finding nothing I gave up and learned to live with it, sort of like an individual character thing.![]()

I've got a ticking noise, back after two clearance adjustments. My rocker assembly looks ok to me, the rocker arm contact points don't look worn and I put new end caps on the stems... but now I'm not sure if its all ok as I never considered 'end float'.
If I can move each rocker up and down the bar, how much movement is too much? What exactly should be checked for wear? Ok so mine is TDI not isuzu but a suppose most rockers assemblies are similar. Could my TDI rocker need spacers or new springs if I still get ticking after proper clearance set?
On the Isuzu, The end arms aren't spring loaded against anything, unlike all the others. In my cae, about a whole mm of endfloat was evident, I could even replicate the sound by hand clicking them sharply along the rocker shaft back and forth.
Choose your shim carefully, I was fortunate to find the tdi valve spring shim removed 95% of the play, but a small amount of endfloat is very important. I would guess about 5 to 8 thou. (.15 to .2mm) is pretty much right
The Tdi is quite different , the likelihood is that you have to check the clearances again. Pay attention especially to whether or not the rocker shaft retaining studs into the head aren't pulling their threads out of the head....

Thanks for the tip JC. I've carefully checked my valve clearances quite a few times, and they always seem right. Been wondering about that mild tapping noise too for many years. Hopefully I can do as you've suggested and then enjoy the other sweet sounds of the Isuzu instead.
Tick tick very annoying ...found the same problem with mine on the back rocker .7mm gap... I found a washer with the correct i.d . It was slightly to thick so carefully sand it down figure 8's on sand paper. placed on a steel plate ...can't believe how much noise it was making now it's gone

I have also noticed a tapping noise after valve clearances were checked. I guess I had better double check, thanks for the tip.
