Need to change clutch for when turbo'ing?

Am just preparing the engine for fitting the turbo and installing in the Defender and was questioning the need to replace the clutch pressure plate and friction plate for the Turbo varieties.

    What happens if you don't?

    this is a depends...

if your clutch is already high KM then yes you replace it and you put in the HD pressure and friction plates.

if your only going with a little turbo action (probablly 15psi max) then you go the HD friction plate with the normal duty pressure plate if you want a better life and the lighter clutch pedal action.

if your clutch is reasonable and you dont drive like a hoon or load it up stupidly with massive boost wound on while power shifting and abusing the clutch then you can get away with it untill it starts to slip.

diana i put up with my n/a clutch for a while, about 12 months into the turbo conversion it started to slip. i installed a turbo spec truck pressure plate, started slipping again about 3 years later. now have a 1.1ton clamp force extreme outback exedy clutch, can't make that sucker slip. i am running max 15psi, and no longer drve like an idiot but do some reasonably heavy towing from time to time, ie rescuing busted landies on car trailers etc...

pedal feel is quite good, i have an average left knee and so far so good,

Thanks guys, remembering that this Defender is 6x6 with a 4.7T GVM and 7.5T GCM, I'm getting the idea that not replacing the clutch will be a fools errand. (The engine being on a pallet ATM)

Justin, do you have part numbers?

Catalogue - Xtreme Clutch - High Performance Clutch Systems & Components

KLR28003-1AX is the kit i used

you will experience some chatter in neutral at idle, that is a trade off IMO as the more forgiving centres for the friction plates allow lots more movement, and movement can mean early spring failure etc. note puma clutches... i would say if the puma ran a dual mass flywheel their clutch problems would be almost non existent. every one i have pulled out the springs have nearly fallen out in my hand...
