    Turbo and Intercooler question

A lot of Turbo questions have been getting thrown around recently and i thought i would join in.

I am looking at intercooling my rangie. it is a factory turbo out of a truck running the stock turbo. It boosts to 100kpa (~14psi) which seems pretty high for not being intercooled? i dont have a pyro so dont know EGTs, (next on the list). Anyway I want to intercool and up the fuel so i get around 20-25Psi as that seems to return a decent amount of drivable torque and power.

Looking at front mount intercoolers and the piping involved requires a bit of cutting and modifying. I can get all the parts reasonably cheaply but before i go and start cutting i was wondering about water to air intercoolers.

My idea is get a W/A IC and mount it like a top mount IC. very little piping, i have a bonnet bulge so it should fit quite easily. Now the radiator i have in is an auto one so has the oil cooler bits, so i was thinking of using the oil cooler section to run the W/A IC. would this work effectively? or am i missing something crucial? Is anyone running this system?

Also the stock Turbo takes ages to spool and is only really useable at mid to high revs. i was thinking of running either a VNT turbo (like the one mike_ie is running) or a T28BB as these spool up really nicely, not sure which size would be best. suggestions?

    cheers

Couple of people here are running WTA intercoolers with decent results.

Unless yours is different, the radiators that I've seen with auto coolers in them only have small inlet/outlet and I don't think will flow enough to be useful. Also, the water temperature in your radiator will be much higher than ambient. You want to have the water going into your intercooler as cold as possible to get the maximum cooling, so its not going to work well from that perspective either.

Frozenboost in the US have pretty cheap WTA components, or if you want really good gear and are prepared to pay for it then check out Plazmaman.

You could give the heat exchanger / radiator a go and see.. But my guess would be too small. The heat exchanger for my WTA IC is 350*550*40 - so quite a bit larger.

yeah I'll give it a go and see what happens. still easier to put a heat exchanger in later than a front mount IC.

    Which turbo do you have?

Water/air intercoolers are very difficult and expensive to get good results from. Air/Air will be worth it. Depending on the model year of your rangie there can be enough clearance between the radiator and front cross-member to fit intercooler pipes.

T28's are not a good match. Read this: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/isuzu-land...rediction.html

I have a factory isuzu one, but want to get something that gives me better low down. was looking at going the VNT way. but will get a turbo that will suit. i have my eye on your turbo suitability thread. i have an 84 4 door, what intercooler fits well?

I have an 85 4 door. An ebay 600x300 looks like it'll fit okay behind the grill (I threw away the AC pusher fans, fitted electrics behind the radiator instead) once you modify the stays for the bonnet latch.
But getting piping to/from it will be an arse. That's why I still haven't done it.

There is about 3" height available under the radiator and above the front cross-member for pipes. But the 93 body which I'll be swapping to eventually doesn't have this gap. The radiator is bigger and sits all the way down.

Alright ill measure up how much clearance i have and see what i can fit. im getting rid of the aircon system as it doesnt work and using the compressor for pumping up tyres.
I have access to a 3" piping kit really cheap, is this too big? i have a feeling my radiator sits all the way down, might have to do some cutting....
