    4BD1T Starter and Alt wiring

For the past few years, I have been slowly rebuilding my 1983 110. There were many problems with rust, bodged electrics and it was in generally poor condition. I am working on the wiring the engine electrics for my 4BD1T. I am good with a wrench but the electrickery is not my strong suit. I could use some help. It is not the typical conversion.

    • New/galvy td5 bulkhead and dash
    • New/take off wiring harness – ROW 2006 300 engine/Td5 everything else

For the alternator, the harness has two wires both with captive nuts. One is a large brown and the second is Brown/Yellow. From the schematic, the heavy brown appears to go to the Starter lug and the brown/yellow goes to the warning light. The LR170 alt also has terminals for a sense wire and an ignition wire. The sense and IG do not appear in 2006 ROW 300tdi/Td5 schematic. My original harness was a rat’s nest. The Sense wire was jumped to the power output lug, not to the battery +.

    • Does the sense need to go directly to Bat +?
    • Which lug on the ignition switch should the IG wire go to?

For the starter, I have the heavy brown that comes from the ALT. There is also a smaller terminal on the side of the started case, with a dangling wire. What connects to this terminal? Does anything else need to go to the starter? I appreciate any help.

    Sounds like a nice project.

I'll leave the IGN and Sense wires for someone more knowledgeable to comment on.
For the starter, there should be a heavy gauge starter cable running from the battery +ve to the large stud on the starter. The heavy output cable from the alternator also connects to this stud - not because it needs to connect to the starter but because its an easy connection to get the alternator output back to the battery.
On my '85 model the main power feed for all systems also attaches to that large stud. Again, its just a convenient place to get a feed from the battery.

The small wire on the starter is most likely the wire to the starter solenoid. When it has power the solenoid engages and the starter runs. It should be connected to the output from the starter relay (relay lives behind the fuse panel I think).

Someone (maybe Bush65 ??)has uploaded an Isuzu County wiring diagram here previously. See if you can find that as it should make things a bit clearer. It won't show the connections for your alternator as the original alternator had an external regulator, whereas yours has an internal one so less wires to connect.
