It is just I have not had a good run with vehicles that have had a history of using recycled vegetable oil, including a 200 TDi Defender that gummed it's injector pump up to the point it remained jammed on at full throttle, resulting in it going over the side of the road, rolling several times down a steep bank, the occupants were badly injured and lucky to escape with their lives.

The vegetable oil needs to thoroughly denatured, as well as being dried and filtered, there are still residue that remain that IMHO make it uneconomic preposition to treat the fuel further.
Then there is a issue of getting the correct lubricating oil that can keep the engine clean from those by products.

Not upset at all - more than happy to have the debate :-) It's just that I've met more than a few people who, when hearing that people run their engines on SVO, pretty much start screaming that it's the work of the devil or something similar.

I take your point, but but to play devils advocate for a second, I know of more than a few diesel powered vehicles that have ploughed uncontrollably into ditches, other vehicles, etc. That doesn't automatically mean that diesel is bad, just that badly maintained diesel engines are bad, same as a badly maintained anything is generally bad. Including SVO set ups. I've spent unhealthy amounts of time under friends vehicles pulling solidified animal fats, crap, and in one case, half a chicken nugget out of fuel systems, or swapping out dissolved rubber seals, or replacing injectors, so on and so forth.

Some engines are more suited to running SVO than others, sure. Some shouldn't run it at all. Some can run it without bother. Most fall somewhere in between. But a well set up system with appropriate maintenance and a good source of oil can work just as well. And at almost $200 per fill of the long range tank, it's certainly worth considering.

Mike, are you sure you haven't run over a Chinaman somewhere? No one deserves the run you have had with engines over here in Aus.
On a positive note, good to hear you have it sorted. As you have found out it appears the injector was the start of the problem which caused the gummy ring and then blowby/knocking. No doubt if it ever happens to you again you won't need to do a strip/rebuild to diagnose it. By now you should be able to rebuild a suzi with your eyes shut

Sometimes, there's nothing you can hold to blame except bad luck, and in this case, that's what it was. Having said that... The ring might have loosened up itself, sure. But the engine sounded like it was going to shake itself apart. It cost me $150 from start to finish to lift the head, fix the problem, fill her with fluids and get on the road again. It would have cost me X thousand dollars if I left it to sort itself out and guessed wrong.

Incidentally, it's one of the easiest engines I've ever worked on (as evidenced by stripdown/rebuild in surf club car park), in terms of how everything bolts off, not to mention that it's built like a brick ****house with ham sized pistons and cylinders the size of paint cans. Much easier than the 300tdi that came out of it. Even happier with my choice to swap out engines now.

    140l long range tank @ 143.1 cents per litre = $200.34

Long range tank is used for SVO, sill tanks for diesel in my usual setup.

On the 6th? Boat was booked for the 11th,,not sure where departure was, so I'd say either they've gone, or changed plans. Last I knew mike was trying to get to daves to give him some parts and drop Brian's Turbo and manifold off, not sure if this happened or not.
