Black smoke to turns to white smoke?

    Hi all
    Odd problems
Range rover classic with a 2.8td Isuzu conversion, runs like a dream, starts first time with a puff of white smoke on first crank, then has a tiny amount until engine warms up then vanishes completely when idle. When I run it and put my foot down I will get black smoke from the exhaust, but , I ran it at around 85mph yesterday on the motorway for about 100m and I noticed after about 10m the black smoke had gone, and it was more white now! The car accelerates fine, no loss of power , and the oil is nice and black with no traces of coolant in it! It seems to be the more I boot it the smoke comes out.

    Anyone any ideas?

    David.

Black smoke is too much fuel for the air or timing too far advanced.
White smoke is not enough compression or timing too far retarded.

Is it possible you're overfuelling and retarded on timing? There are other possible causes too. But that's the nicest one.
Blown turbo is a not so nice one.

Theres not ALOT of smoke, it disperses very quickly at 80mph so it doesn't cover the road lol

Hmmm, was looking over the engine today, and noticed when I start it, it appears im getting a leak from the following location:

This picture was taken just as the engine cranked and started, it blow for a split second when starting, and also blows some more when reved, but NOT MUCH AT ALL.

If it is coming from the breather it would fit well with the rings theory.

IT seems to be coming from the gasket directly under the turbo.
