    4BD1 Alternator

Hey guys, this is my first post so I hope this hasn't been covered somewhere earlier...

The alternator on my 1987 4BD1 has packed up and my auto elec tells me he cant get another one!! I was wondering if this is true or can I get one off the net somewhere???

Any help would be greatly appreciated, regards JamesPM

G'day JamesPM and welcome to AULRO. I am guessing that your vehicle is a County with the Isuzu 4BD1 motor. It should have a 40A externally regulated alternator unless someone has changed it. Unlikely they are still made but if so price would be over the top I reckon. You could put an ad in the wanted section of the markets here, quite possible someone may have one lying around as a lot have upgraded to bigger amp internally regulated ones, otherwise get on the internet, EBAY USA have lots of suitable ones - 12V 70A is an ideal size but it must have the B section pulley or it won't fit your belt. Quite a lot of yank vehicles with this motor had the correct 12V 70A one. Do a search on here for "Isuzu alternator" and have a read through the threads, lots of info here. You also have to modify your bracket when you fit the 70A one.
    Cheers......Brian

Apparently the alternator from some Holden Rodeo or Jackeroo diesels can be fitted with minor mods.

I have the Isuzu truck motor, which came with a 24 Volt alternator. I replaced it with a 12V alternator for a Nissan Patrol or Narva. I had to cut about 3mm from the mounting bracket (a few minutes work to cut in situ with a hacksaw), and swap over the Vee belt pulley from the old 24V alternator.

The existing hoses fitted the vacuum pump on the new alternator.

    James,
Here is a link on how I changed mine to a 70A unit that I got from the US.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Vern, if you could send me some pictures of the alternator you have we might be able to do a deal. I'd much rather not have to modify to much if i can get away with it.

I got mine refurbished for $200 by an auto electrician, cheaper and easier than buying one from the US.

Shouldn't have to modify it, its stock 40a stage 1 series111 alternator.
