yep, you got your hands on one of the older wide bearing stubs or you got a brit part bit.
Has anyone had a problem where the stub axle on a county is to long. I changed to a new looking one and could no get the bearing to adjust. It was always to sloppy even with a bar on the pipe socket. Changed it back to the old one and the bearing adjusted up as normal. Any ideas ?

Just to add to what Dave said. I think the change over was in 1987. That is the stub axles became shorter with closer wheel bearing spacing than before.
so what is the fix? Are there any measurements? I got the bits of a v8 county wheck one side was fine and the other side had this problem. The strange thing was I used the stub, hub with the bearings off the wreck. I guess I should had a look at the bearing part numbers.
If one side was fine and the other not, why dont you measure all the components you have against each other?
1987 onwards rear axle drum brake:
Stub axle FRC8540
Hub FRC8555
"Spacer" FRC8227
Now you may be missing the "spacer". The spacer goes after the outboard wheel bearing, before the adjusting nut, lock tab and lock washer…...
