    The white wire from the external regulator

    Hi All,

    Is there anyone still running the original external regulator setup that can measure what the white wire does?

    I'm pretty sure it should be providing a 12v feed to the ignition, but I'm not sure if it is always on, only when the ignition is on or only when the engine is running.

    It supplies a few of the warning lights and while I previously fudged their operation now I have a few days free it would be great to have it all working as it should be.

    Where is the external regulator located? Didn't realise it isn't part of the alternator until now....

    From the wiring diagram it looks like it is 12v when ignition is ON. I say this because it appears to be directly wired to all the dash gauges and warning lights. Turn the key until the fuel, temp gauges and oil light come on (before starting). Pretty sure the white wire will be 12v then. (As well as engine running).

    Thanks 12V when the engine is running fits well. I'm assuming it is a feed from the reg, rather than a feed to the reg as it has nothing now.

    The reg should be mounted on the passenger side wheel arch, engine bay side below the A/C.

    Right, worked it out. There was a problem with the loom I had made up. fixed now though.

    Good to hear. I actually took the cover off my regulator today but it didn't help with access to the white wire. It goes into the back of the regulator so taking the cover off didn't help.

    I would have replied earlier if I had useful answers....

    been awhile since iver looked but when i rewired everything i kept the old external reg setup and yes the white wire did goto the ignition from memory

    Yeah thanks chief. I went through a few versions trying to get something that was clean and easy for someone to work with in the future. Ultimately I removed the reg as having two would be confusing, and it is unlikely that I will fit an alt with an external reg in the future.

    In the end my problem was that the white wires should be joined (shown on the far right middle of the wiring diagram) and mine had two sections that should have been joined but were not. I had done work arounds for the reverse lights and the oil light but it wasn't clean and would be a pain for someone to trouble shoot in the future as logically if you were troubleshooting and expecting those circuits to be joined you would test it and it would lead you down the wrong path. Because of this I wanted it to match the diag as much as possible (inc cable colours) so I've been very mindful to go back and properly fix anything that works but isn't quite right.

    I ended up bridging the circuits as per the diag, and now it's works as it should. The interesting thing about the white circuit is that it is either earthed or +12v depending on if the engine is running or not. This was a bit confusing but makes sense when you think of how the reverse light and oil pressure light work.
