Thread: KLR Turbo Kit

Whoever the LR mechanic was that said not to turbo the NA engine - don't deal with him again. That statement is complete BS, and he's obviously lacking in knowledge, or not interested.

There's plenty of knowledge around here from people who have done turbo conversion on NA engines, so unless you want to just drop it off to someone and get it back turbo'd - if you have even mediocre mechanical skills there's no reason to spend a huge amount of money to do it.

Wether or not to turbo is down to the engine. If you have a 4BD1, then turbo it. If you have a 2.25 Diesel, then I wouldn't recommend it

There are a lot of people that are afraid of putting a turbo on a non-turbo engine, this is reinforced by the fact that many non-turbo engines will not handle one. Luckily, the Isuzu 4BD1 is designed to have a turbo so you don't need to worry at all.

I spoke to KLR a few years ago about fitting a turbo.. I'm not sure what they are charging these days but all told it was quite reasonable for a drive in / drive out before. I ended up doing my turbo myself, and it actually cost a little more than theirs in parts doing it all myself (with the help of many on here). But I did it with top class / bling bits (Borgwarner EFR turbo, Plasmaman intercooler, aeroflow oil lines etc)

Thanks guys! Firstly, I couldn't agree more about being told not to turbocharge the 4BD1. However, these guys are one of QLD's biggest LR specialist. I had contacted them and asked if they are doing a Turbo Kit when I got the reply.

I'm definitely going down the turbo route and am just trying to figure out my total purchase cost of the vehicle as I would hope to get the turbo sorted shortly after purchase.

I was hoping that someone had pics of the install KLR do. They definitely use a Garrett TC and one of two choices in manifold. A previous post here said they were told "around $4K" and today I was told "around $4.5K".

I have read through most threads on here and throughout the internet over the past couple of days in regards to TC'ing the 4BD1, and in particular the Land Rover installations.

I have seen threads on AULRO stating that there are parts lists around for the installations, but haven't really seen anything quite like that.

Just for the sake of clarification, what all is required?

- TurboCharger (say $1K for a Top shelf one)
- Manifold ($350 new)
- Boost and EGT Gauges ($300?)
- Plumbing Bits ($250?)
- Exhaust works ($500)

I've really got no idea on the prices above for the items with (?) beside them, but would just like to get an idea about what actual parts would be required.

hmm I collected parts over a number of years as I could afford them, until I more or less had all that is needed. Off the top of my head.. this is what I needed:

Auto elecy to recover AC gas
Turbo
Silicone Hoses, T clamps
Provent (plus hoses, hose clamps)
Oil pipes and drains and converters ($$$$$)
Heat proof cover for oil lines where they are close to exhaust
Turbo Manifold, gaskets, exhaust studs
heater unit, seals, heater pipes, bleed valve, control cables
Intercooler (plus pump, interchanger, hoses, wiring harness as I run W2A)
Modify the air filter, goose neck
Exhaust (I used pre-made mandrel bends and pipe for a home fab job)
Misc hoses
EGT
Boost Gauge
and engineering if it is required where you live.

I also made my own brackets and adaptors where I could..

Buying all new bits I think you're list is probably pretty right, but my estimates usually end up on the low side
If you get a good turbo, you're going to need an intercooler too. A lesser turbo and keep the boost down around 15psi and you can get away without it.
Final cost really depends on whether you want to go all out and do a top job first time ($$$) or if you're happy for a more budget install which will still be an awesome improvement over NA.

Mine was more of a budget install - a used T25G from a Nissan (which I put a seal kit through), no intercooler, factory turbo manifold and a "functional" dump pipe that I built myself. The only work I farmed out was fitting the flex joint in the dump pipe as it needed a bit of pipe expansion and frigging around so I got my local exhaust guy to do it.
Mine is on an early (1981 build) ex Stage1 engine so no fancy alfin pistons as you'd get on the late engines. Its done almost 50K km's in the last 3 years with that setup, and done everything I've asked of it. It loves towing and heavy loads and I've just come back from a 2500km round trip over the weekend with a trailer to pick up another Isuzu landy.
Yes - I could do with more boost and an intercooler, but very happy with how its performed so far.

I had a great conversation with them yesterday and it was nice of them to take the time to discuss the conversion. It's quite a costly exercise, but I'm sure it is one of those things that I would like to do sooner rather than later if possible.

Also, I had another LR mechanic get back to me today and he suggested to not put on the Turbo as the NA version couldn't handle it. Now, I've read otherwise and also noted the differences in the engine(s), but this is a VERY well known group, so I was surprised to hear this from them.

BTW that comment about turbo'ing 4BD1s refers to earlier engines - and even they seem to be OK to add a turbo to and nobody I know has experienced problems.
