    Liner question

Is it possible to take the liners and pistons from one 4bd1 block and fit them to a different one?

Just wondering as I have a late model truck block with turbo oil return port (as yet I haven't stripped it but supposedly dumped all its oil), and a good earlier NA engine.

Would be nice to have the proper return port, and if it was a simple case of fitting the good parts into the later block (and probably adding piston squirters at the same time) it might be worthwhile.

Yeah the stuffed truck engine is the one I picked up a few months back from ebay.

    Short answer is no.

The liners are matched to the bores, four different grades. Looser isn't a huge problem; it just creates more noise and vibration. But tighter than intended could be catastrophic.

Aftermarket liners are really cheap, but are the loosest fit.

    Thanks Dougal.

Just for my own understanding, am I correct to assume the fit of the liner controls the final bore ID, and therefore too tight a fit won't be enough piston clearance (hence your catastrophic comment)?
And following on from that, are the pistons matched to liners as a pair, or is it more a case of the pistons being kept relatively close tolerance and the liner fit chosen to end up with correct bore ID?

Basically looking along the lines of if you had a couple of engines with varying piston/liner issues, would it be possible to consolidate to one half decent one as long as you made sure you ended up with appropriate clearances?

I believe it's the second. Pistons and rings the same and the different liners take up the difference. But I won't know for certain until I rebuild my engine again or a new block for my engine.

Thought I'd better stop being lazy and RTFM.

pp 6A6-32 and 6A6-35 in the Isuzu 4BD1T manual (that comes on the Isuzu CD from the Aulro shop).

    Paraphrasing:
Liners come in 4 grades (1-4), and are supplied as a set with a matched piston which come in 2 grades (A and C).
The liner grade number should be written in permanent ink on the block deck on the RH side of the bore. If you cant find it then you have to measure the block to determine.
The piston grade that was fitted at the factory is stamped on the LH side of the block deck (grades SABCDE ) which is only info as you can't specify piston grade when ordering them anyway (only liner grade).
When fitted, correctly chosen liners should have a bore dimension that nicely matches that expected for the A or C grade of piston supplied in the kit.
Why they decided to use ink for the info someone may need in the future, and then stamp info thats only meaningful to the factory is anyone's guess.

So I reckon if anyone removes the head on their engine, have a look for the liner grade markings on the block BEFORE you clean it..
Could be useful info to have on file.
