    Starter Motors

    Hi all,

Not long ago I replaced the starter motor with an un-branded 12V one that I purchased from the US. It has lasted about 6000km and now it increasingly wont turn over due to a sticky solenoid. The usual tapping (banging) on it doesn't seem to dislodge it - I need to put it in gear and shove the 110 back and forward to get it to turn over. It is also draining the battery if I leave it stuck for any length of time.

To replace it I have to remove the exhaust, turbo, alt and heater. So it isn't something I want to have to do again soon.

I contacted EAX but they are not making a 12V one anymore... Has anyone sourced a Denso one ? (I really don't want an other crap pattern copy).

Keep an eye on fleabay etc and see if you can get hold of one of the Mitsubishi ones as fitted to the perenties. They are a good quality starter and "water resistant". Pretty sure a lot of the wrecks from the auctions will end up being parted out after someone had got what they wanted off them.

Thanks Brian. I fear that it will be a while before parts are released and most will want to move an engine complete, but I've certainly got my eyes open.

I wonder if the issue with yours is just the standard low finish and quality control, little or no lubrication etc that you get on cheap aftermarket parts.

Like the reports of cheap winches needing to be stripped, cleaned down and have real grease applied instead of the dried up soy sauce they come with.

Did you just fit yours straight out of the box, or give it a bit of a going over first?

Yeah I think you are right - sadly I just fitted it up. I'll pull it apart and see if there is anything obvious while I look for a permanent solution..
