True, but I wanted to buy an old 200 or 300 & go the whole hog with an Isuzu at one stage, so much the same thinking as Dervish. Now I'm thinking a County would be better - but for the horrible electrics & vacuum heater/aircon controls.

Source your 4bd1T and MSA box as a single unit, then see Outcast Offroad Bris for the LT230 adaptor kit. Not cheap.

If Tdi300 has served you well then maybe reconditioning the engine would be more cost effective.

Just over 400,000k is not the end of the engine. Before considering a recon maybe look at variable turbo, larger intercooler etc to get a bit more out of the existing engine condition, before recon at about 600,000k.

Thanks for the heads up on Outcast. They have recently posted pictures of the adapter on their facebook page, it looks the goods:

It doesn't appear to deal with the linkages to the lt230 though (I'll call them to check), and looking at the grubb's photos the MSA shifter mechanism has to be fabricated as well to fit with the Defender trans tunnel. If Bush65 has worked out a cable shift solution - well that may be easy enough for me to try. I guess that would mean finding a specific cable shift MSA (I also see the MSA to go for is the 5G). I think I'd rather a solid coupling to a divorced TC; with any luck Outcast's adapter allows the use of the stock driveshafts.

Once I know it's technically feasible I'll get in touch with an engineer. If the 4BD1 is a no-go with my Defender, I'll have to go the Perentie chassis route.

Of course, rebuilding the 300 is going to be the cost effective option. But if given the choice of doing it cheap or doing it right, I'd always choose the latter. The 300 is a good engine; but everything it does well, the Isuzu does better.

Here's some more info from the Outcast Offroad adapter,

Drive shafts and transfer case stay in the stock position.
LT230 shifter is from a ZF auto, all bolt on.
Shaft is made from EN26 and through hardened to 46 Rockwell.
Adapter is machined from a solid block of aluminium.
Left side mount to chassis and bolts come with adapter.
Engine stays in the stock position too.

Gearbox shifter kit is still under final stages of production, he says they shouldn't be too far away.

    Cheers Eric

Mine peaked at 47.6 on the Tenix dyno

My County had the 4BE 1 engine fitted, it also had extractors, twin filters, LT95 Gearbox and had been a well thought out conversion

I found this motor revved a lot more easily than the 4BD 1 and was a lot smoother and quicker off the mark
As an off road toy it was perfect, but as a family tourer / camper it was too noisy as one couldn't have a conversation at 90 - 100kmh

I'd be thinking rebuilding and improving the 300tdi if it was my vehicle.

Mines getting better noise wise. However, I agree rebuilding the 300tdi is easier, simpler and probably quicker. Especially if the rest of the 110 is ok. It's also a good motor.

Well that's the most expensive looking adapter I've seen. Volume of aluminium and volume of swarf must be horrendous.
