Thanks guys.
Yes, choose the gear you want first, but can't always see what's coming and rather than stop to change down you want to do it on the roll.
So do you have to stop to engage 1st? Or can you do it on the roll?
The reason I ask is because of my experience with the two land cruisers I've owned over the years.
The first was a 1981 'noddy' or short wheel base. Nice quick gear change action up and down - even without using the clutch (provided you judged the revs).
Traded it on a 1991 'troopy'. Gearbox is a different kettle of fish. Number of times I've wanted to change down on the roll only to find it wont engage down, no grinding...have to stop, release clutch, and try again. When I realised this problem I thought I'd try the no clutch-judge the revs method. It would disengage but not find any gate up or down.
It's a very disconcerting feeling.
I trust that people don't mind but these last few pages had gone off on a tangent, although for a worthy topic, I have split the topic into another thread on the oils etc for the Isuzu MSA.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Umm, I wondered what happened.
I was trying to post something just found re my 1hz on explore oz which seems to support the recommendation of the vmx for the Isuzu box...
'Gearboxes can have troubles, especially downshifting to second (though you might not notice this in a newer model for a while!). Many users solve this by changing the gearbox oil to Castrol VMX-M- great stuff'
Changing to 1st on the fly is a non event.
Hmm is for me.![]()
You're probably right
