I'm probably going to go ahead and rebuild rather than another engine. After pulling down the engine and inspecting crank and camshaft journals found that they have very little wear. Valves were quite worn around the seating face but after a grind are still well within limits.

What really has me amazed is how the thing was still running given the condition for the pistons.
I mentioned No.2 had eaten some metal, also had broken upper compression ring.
No.1 also broken upper compression ring

The best one was No.3 piston
Broken upper compression ring, half of which was missing (burnt?)
and nearly burnt though to the crown of the piston.

Have to say the isuzu's are a pretty tough engine, considering the damage and piston wear and the fact it showed no loss in power

Unless you have the fuelling turned right up then that looks like an injector problem. The 4BD1/T alfin pistons were made to stop that happening.

Was talking to someone off line and conversation got around to 4bd1 engines and rebuilds.

Comment was made that Isuzu were selling rebuild kits on special (Perth somewhere).

Further, that when you take the head off there should be an individual marking or ID for each liner.

The liners in the kit did not seem to take account of this and some people were finding the liners not necessarily going in as tight as they should be, resulting in 'noisy' engines.

Don't know how correct all this is but maybe something to look out for as head is removed and mention to Isuzu.

I just remembered that your engine has the same bore as a 4BD1, so you can use Alfin pistons as fitted to late model 4BD1 NA and all T engines.

The alfin pistons have a steel land that the top ring sits in - to prevent exactly what has happened with your engine.

It is also worth balancing the pistons and rods while you are doing the rebuild. There are some good videos online that show you how to do it. All you need is an accurate balance.

Just an N.A., fuel is turned up a little but not much (didn't think you could kill the N.A's with the fuel screw) I'm thinking the injector is dodgy, was a little lumpy on startups during winter. Have been meaning to replace them or at least check spray pattern and crack pressures, will be putting some new ones in now i think.

The alfin pistons are they an aftermarket or from Isuzu?

Yep I'm aware of the liner grade having to match the stamped grade on the block.

The only query I do have about the liners is whether i can expect a liner grade change due to any wear caused by pressing out the old liners?

It is probably easier to kill an na motor by turning up the fuel screw (or more correctly the max load set bolt - i think).

Alfin pistons are genuine originally.

Out of curiosity do you know if the 4BB1 and 4BD1 use the same length liner? are they interchangeable? I'm thinking not because of the longer stroke length of the 4BD1
