Glad we r back on track! So, the shafts that did break, have they all broken in the same place, or at different points? Was it an adapted LR part or a bespoke manufactured part? Just curious as Id be interested to know how strong the 'spud shaft' I have actually is? Kinda thinking Im glad I went down the welded gear route.

Straight break or twisted off? Any tell tail signs of miss alignment? Was the point of breakage at the edge of where the splined shaft goes into the LT input gear? Sorry for all he questions, just painting the pic in my mind. Oh, and was the shaft hollow?

    Nice thread.

So in wannabee terms what I've been calling preload you would prefer referred to as end float, slap or clearance depending on application - fair enough. To be clear on the distinction, what would you see as clear cases of applied preload, what you yourself would call preload - I guess in the context of shafts, gears and their respective bearings?
firstly it is not what i call preload or not, its the engineering world. nothing to do with me. this was sorted way before my time.

an example of pre-load. i have already given, spinal moulder, over head router, with angular contact

Haven't you read any of the million posts
Shaft is solid, clean snap, both broke where the transition goes up to the seal surface area.
OK so if you haven't seen the many pics on these msa threads of the shaft, I'll give you a little description of how the shaft looks

You have 70mm of sae10 spline, the shaft waists down to minimal spline diameter and is flat for 40mm, the 90degree transition up to 43mm diameter for the seal surface, 30mm of seal surface area, then tapers up about at 45 degree into a 120mm diameter flange, well that's a very rough description.
Now where the 90degree (small radius) transition is is where they snap

Spoke with barry today in regards to making this shaft, just need to get him the bits and some measurements.

we discussed what they would be made out of, suggested en26.
Told him my shaft was made from en26, discussed heat treating it, he said it should never have been heat treated! So who ever talked sheldon into getting this done, you ruined my holiday!😜.

    He will use hy tuff.
