    Lost first gear LT95A gearbox

Well I pulled the back plate off the gearbox. Snapring looked partially off on close examination so I removed it (with the help of circlip pliers) and the shim, gear and spacer. I rotated the shaft for about half an hour, just for the hell of it and then put everything back into place. The snapring looked as if it would fit so I covered everything with threadlocker (no loctite in our neck of the woods) and put it back together. In hindsight I suspect the rear bearing now has its fair share of threadlocker imbedded. I haven't used loctite before. My last mechanical job was an FX holden. The problem is still there. No first gear, no noise or crunching and you get the impression you have put it into gear. I can take the floor off and the top off the gearbox off for a look but then what. I suspect the box will have to come out. It is probably time to give it to someone who knows what they are doing. Probably cheaper to buy anther car at the army auctions.

Did you find any metal in the filter when you drained the gearbox oil?
If everything is fine now on the transfer side the problem has to be inside the box. By removing the top cover you will probably see where the problem is but unless its something simple unfortunately its a remove and repair operation now.

    No first gear

Haven't drained the oil yet. I need to get the right bits to be able to put it back in again afterwards (pressure bottle). I will pull the top off the gearbox in a couple of days once I psyche myself into it. Will let you know the outcome. Thanks for all help so far.

    LT95A no first gear

Well, pulled the top off the gearbox. Found the problem. All the teeth from first gear are now in the bottom of the gearbox. Bugger! I am used to vehicles stalling when snagged on something, not eating the gears.

Wife will not be pleased. Thanks for all the help from all.

You need a new first gear, sounds like the quality of the one in it was a bit questionable, it shouldn't strip the engaging dogs like that. Unfortunately its a remove and strip down job to remove all metal from the gearbox and replace the gear, which means all new gaskets and seals and possibly any bearings that may be damaged by steel debris from the gear. A lot of hours involved to strip/clean/check and reassemble. Can you post up a photo of the damaged gear so we can all see it. I will PM all the part numbers you need to fix it.

    Lots of work ahead

Have ordered all the parts from Brit Parts in England. Have lined up some local help and am clearing a space in the shed. Just have to wait to see what arrives. Lots of help from Bearman - thanks again

    Progress ...

    Hi All,

Well, it looks like I have outdone myself on the procrastination department. Six months after posting this issue I finally pulled the back plate off the 'box and had a look.

(The truck has been "off the road" (unused) for 3 of those 6 months, btw).

Sadly, the shaft and rear gear appear secure and there is no sign of a detached shim or circlip.

Just to be clear, is the clip located on my side of that gear? Everything on this side of the gear looks pretty tight.

Or is it on the other side of the gear (from my point of view)?

If Im not seeing the loose clip, does this suggest my first gear has been eaten, like Caveman's?

Yep, if the snap ring is still on there behind the gear the problem is in the box and possibly the same as what Brian has had happen.

there are 2 other semi common causes...

the engagement teeth of the syncro drive mech being torn off and the selector failing to push the selector far enough.

both have different initial symptoms to the near instant failure of the torn off teeth or slipped snapring vairent of failure.

IF you can get some kind of "drive effort" when you go to get first its the torn p syncro drive. it will feel like its baulking you from getting into frist

all acedemic in the end because its all box out work.b
