Engine Oil Change on my Perentie.

I can't go to Melrose, so it's oil change time for the Perentie.
I have the oil and I have the filter.
But it looks to me like the filter change is going to be very messy - or am I wrong?
What is going to stop all the oil in the upside down filter from glugging out when I undo it? Does the non return valve actually work?
Is it better to drain the engine first, then do the filter, or vice versa?
And then when the new filter goes on, I guess I fill it up, invert it, and hope for the best as I screw it back on.
Just looking for any helpful advice that will avoid management having an issue with a big puddle of oil on the carport floor!!!!!!

Drain the sump first, then undo the drain bung on the side of the filter housing. Wait till it has drained and then remove the filter. No matter what you do there is going to be some spillage and mess. Make sure you have an oil tray or pan underneath. Clean it all up, put the bungs back in and fill the sump. Don't fill the filter as it will all go everywhere when you invert it. Smear a little oil on the filter rubber seal and put it on. Then start the engine and let it run for a couple of minutes. Check oil level and top up if necessary, also check the bungs and filter seal for leaks. Hey presto!!

I'm guessing this is the filter drain plug?

Silly me, thinking it would run out neatly into the drain pan!
From sump to diff/prop shaft and steering linkage to drain pan.
Yuk. But otherwise, so far so good.
    Now to the filter.

Was unable to undo the drain plug from above the filter so did it from below.
Next time I do the filter, I'm going to punch a hole in the top of it so the oil flows out of the drain plug rather than glugging out of the hole.
My arm and armpit did appreciate the warm oil as it ran down, but overall, it wasn't too bad.
Put the new filter on with a smear of loi on the O ring, then replaced and tightened the 2 drain plugs, refilled and presto - oil light was on for about 15 secs, then went out.
I think I put in a total of about 6L of oil, but it is midway between the 2 small holes on the dipstick.

You will get used to it. There are 2 ways to stop the oil from the sump plug going all over the driveshaft and uni when the oil is hot -
1........Hold a funnel up under the plug as you undo it
2........Wrap some plastic (old shopping bag etc) around the shaft and diff nose

If the oil is cool you just hold the plug at an angle to the hole when you have unscrewed it and control the oil flow until the majority has drained but don't do this with hot oil.

I use cutup milk or cordial bottles,

It's also risked I you retrofit the original carriage filter housing as it's got a breather vent that you can open
