    Pre 4BD1+T mod inspection

    Hi all,

I'm currently working towards turboing my 87 110 GS. It currently has approx 156000km on the clock. In so far as my limited knowledge of diesel engines can determine, the 4BD1 appears to be running pretty well. From the reading I've done most seem to just wack the turbo on and go from there, however for added peace of mind I'm considering getting mine looked at by someone who actually knows what there doing when it comes to these engines. My question being, is this really worthwhile? I guess theres only so much they can check without pulling the engine apart, and I'm not quit ready to go down that road yet.
I'd most likely get Zenith engineering in Brisbane to have a look as they're not too much of a drive and appear to have dealt with plenty of the military 4BD1's. If anyone has alternative suggestions for the Sunshine Coast/Brisbane region, that'd be greatly appreciated too!

    Apologies for the long post,
    Ben

G'day Ben, Your engine is just about run in at those K's, so I wouldn't worry about getting it checked out if it is running fine now. The N/A motor will handle a turbo with ease, they are built that robust, but make sure you fit EGT and boost gauges at the same time so you can keep an eye on boost and head temperatures. Mike Vine at Capalaba is another bloke who has done quite a few of these over the years. After fitment it is a good idea to have it dynoed to get the fuel right and see what temps/boost are. The difference is astounding, like going from a 4cyl to a V8. Well worth it - you can overtake with ease even towing a trailer

Hi Brian, thanks for taking the time to respond! Very much reassuring to hear your views about the 4BD1. EGT and Boost gauges are already on the shopping list.

One more question (and at risk of opening a can of worms) with regards to intercooler choice, would a bar and plate type intercooler be the way to go over the tube and fin? Opinions I've read on which of the two is better seems to depend on who's been fed what marketing dribble and not on any hard fact.

Ideally I'd like a WTA setup as per Flagg's install but that'd be very much pushing the budget.

Haven't had any experience with intercoolers, I run both of mine without one. Personally I don't see the need for one as neither of mine run hot and have plenty of grunt and it's just something else to go wrong in my opinion. These are truck engines and didn't run an intercooler in that application. Try to keep it as simple as you can. Some on here have done it, have a look under the search function for things like "isuzu 4BD1 intercooler" and have a bit of a read. There's air to air and water to air to choose from - your choice. Service the engine regularly and it will last you out!
    Cheers......Brian
