    Isuzu rear crank seal

Well I was just thinking yesterday that I am getting close to finishing all the jobs on the 6x6 that I want to do and lo and behold after a trip to Rockhampton yesterday I find an oil spot under Brutus this morning. Looks pretty dark so I slip underneath and sure enough it's coming from the bellhousing. Engine oil!!! A couple of months ago I changed the rear main seal to the later 2 piece type and thought I had cured the leak that it had when I bought it but it appears it's started leaking again for some reason. The crank journal surface area was good with no wear in the area where the seal runs so I don't know why it's started leaking - bugger, looks like I will have to pull the engine again to sort it out. I think this time I will do what I did to the 4x4 last time - put 2 normal type seals in with plenty of seal lube in between. It hasn't leaked yet in around 50k since I did it.
    Cheers......Brian

Thats a pain brian😕. Weird thing is that the 750k engine in our 110 has no leaks at all from the rear seal and it even had lots of crankcase pressure!😣. Is there any excessive endfloat in the crank?

Didn't even check that JC, with only 20k on the speedo I wouldn't think there would be any wear at all, surely!!!

Mate i agree i don't think wear has anything to do with it😮 if someone has been in there as a 'maintenance' activity you have no idea what they could've done...😕

Can't remember now what the measurement is but the crank thrust brgs in mine were almost unmarked. And the total thrust was a midrange measurement.

Brian, do you have any more info in regards to the twin seals? About to order some bits for my truck motor to get it ready for the install, rear main is on the list.

I ended up not putting the 2 seals in Damien but instead replaced it with another new type seal which hasn't leaked since then. But to explain how it's done, in the army type sealed flywheel housing there is enough room to fit 2 standard type seals one behind the other. Put heaps of bearing lube in between them as the rear one will not have any oil lubrication and needs something to stop it running dry and failing. I don't know whether there is enough room in a truck flywheel housing for 2 seals though.

The SKF one is the new sleeved type Damien . BYG2767 is the part number. If you are going to use 2 of the old type ones 1096254020 is the part number you want. I have a few spare ones of those.

I decided to go with the new type even tho I did have a failure with the first one and so far it looks good and hopefully I have made the right decision. I really couldn't see anything wrong with the seal, maybe it was a dud from new, Saying that the double up of the old type I put in the county engine from new never leaked at all. I guess ultimately you have to make that decision.
