    Which way does turbo coolant run?

    Hi All,

    I have 4BD1 with a water (and oil) cooled turbo. I'm fitting a heater/demister, but I'm short on coolant connection points to feed the heater matrix. I plan to run coolant through the turbo to the heater matrix and then back into the main cooling system. I figure the turbo will pre-heat the coolant running into the heater matrix, so I want to be sure that I know which way the coolant is running.

    One pipe to the turbo is connected to the thermostat housing. The other pipe is connected to the water pump. I can make an educated guess as to which way the coolant runs, but can anybody tell me with certainty whether it runs:
    a) from water pump to thermostat housing; or
    b) from thermostat housing to water pump.

    a. is the correct one Dave. Cool water enters from just before the water pump and then through the turbo to the pipe connection after the thermostat. At least that's what the factory turbo motors have.

    Thanks Brian. Another piece of the puzzle.

    Naturally the hoses for the heater matrix and turbo are different sizes. I was thinking I'd just get a different screw in fitting for the turbo outlet and thermostat inlet to go up to 5/8 hose. I don't suppose you'd know where I could go to find those sort of fittings? Pretty sure I can rule out Bunnings

    Yes, I doubt if they would have them, but you never know. I would imagine any hydraulic shop like enzed would have them.

    I vaguely recall having hassles with the fitting sizes when I did my conversion. Think I bought some genuine ones from isuzu. Don't think they were dear either.

    Would the turbo not cause a restriction in the cooling system? Should it not be paralleled with the heater matrix instead of being inline?

    I never hooked up my water cooling lines on the turbo so interested to hear other peoples thoughts.

    I don't believe the turbo will cause a restriction that will be problem for the cooling system as such. The turbo cooling line is auxiliary to the main engine cooling system. The turbo has been there for some years and will continue to take coolant at the same rate. The return will be routed through the matrix and go directly back to the main system. The rate of flow may be incrementally affected (although the inlet at the thermostat housing will be the same size and the system will be pressurised), but the volume will not. If anything, routing the return through the matrix will drop the temperature of the coolant on its way back to the main system, which would have to be a benefit. The addition of the matrix will also increase the overall capacity of the cooling system, although not by a significant amount.

    Hi, Mr New from the Uk here .but a bit good with diesels and turbos .

    The water lines to the turbo are there to take use of the thermo siphon effect after the engines been stopped .

    So the the cooler water goes in the bottom inlet and the hot goes out the top.

    Thats after the engine stops ,but don't take my word for it .

    3/8" BSPT is the thread for changing the heater hose barbs on the water pump and thermostat housing.

    The way I read this is different to my understanding.....

    If you look at the 2 heater hose barbs.
    There's 1 on the water pump and 1 on the thermostat housing.
    Coolant goes toward the heater from the thermostat housing barb and returns to the water pump barb.
