Left work early this afternoon and picked up the isuzu water pump. Here it is compared to the PWP3003.

Heater hose barb changed over and gasket that came with the isuzu pump:

Old pump was very simple to remove. 4 bolts and pull away from the block.

    Cleaned and installed...

Nice work. Did you notice any difference in quality between the two pictured next to each other? The grey one looks a little nicer.

Can the barb be drilled and tapped into the other housing? Or are there internal differences?

No major differences as far as I could tell but hard to say. Both had about the same resistance to turn by hand which was quite a bit compared to my old one. Old one spun freely and also had some play in the shaft, so that would explain the leak. My guess is if I take apart my old one there will be no grease on the bearings and completely dry, possibly corroded. The new ones feel like a bearing fully packed with grease. Interesting that the new Isuzu one doesn't have a grease nipple tho. Protex one does.

I can inspect further but I can't see why you couldn't tap a thread. If I had a 3/8" BSPT tap at home I would have done it. I was going for fastest option so it was either go buy a tap or go buy the Isuzu pump. I chose the $400 option!
