Sender unit and fuel gauge malfunction

Hello everyone this problem I am having with my sender and fuel gauge is turning my hair gray or maybe white.
Any recently replace the sender unit in my 1985 110 county / isuzu the old one died. the new one worked for a bout 2 weeks then i ran out of fuel when there gauge was showing between 1/4 and 1/2 and no low level warning light came on. Pulled everything apart checked all the wiring the earth and also the ohms. on the gauge and sender unit. they matched. so plugged it all together before putting back in take and it worked fine. moved the arm and the gauge responded. great whacked it back in. Now it hardly moves from full for about 280klm. the tank only holds about eighty litres put 60 litres in and it was showing half a tank. went through the whole process again and when the sender is not in the tank in all works well put it back in and same issue.
HAS ANYBODY HAD SIMILAR ISSUES. Its driving me nuts.

the purpose of the fuel sender is to tell lies to the fuel gauge.

if the gauge does not indicate whats in the tank its working normally.

(the float arm is fouling on the tank baffle, turn the thing around)

    I have the same problem.
New sender, half a tank used before the gauge moves off full.

I think the old dip stick on the series II is a much better idea!

Thanks for the response Blknight. I have checked to see where the float is and it is facing away from the baffle unless there is 2 in there and I can't see one.

rocket scientist if I make any more progress I'll let you know, just having a break from it otherwise I'll go nuts.
    thanks for the suggestions
    Cheers Peter
