    Perentie 6x6 in USA

    Hi everyone,

As a Land Rover enthusiast for many years I always had a special interest in the Perenties you have down there. Earlier this year I was able to buy a civilian 6x6 in your country and had it shipped to USA.

The entire sale was a nightmare but I finally have a car I really like.
    However...

Although the seller told me this car was in good condition, it is not drive able, it jumps out of high range.

As far as I can figur out the shaft in the transfer case needs new longitudinal bearings.

    Thks

    Congrats on the purchase.

I had a LT85 that did that. After first selecting high or low I had to apply some pressure to the selector stick as I was taking off. It would then stay there. You only had to do it once, immediately after selecting high or low. I hope that helps.

If it is a 6x6 it has the LT95 combined gearbox and transfer case. This box is also used in Perenties and early Rangerovers, and although it varied a bit with the application, I strongly suspect that the bearings, if that is the only problem, are the same as the Rangerover, and since that was sold in the USA, this may be the easiest source. However, all parts, except the third axle drive parts, would also be readily available by mail order from UK suppliers.

Jumping out of gear however, is not necessarily bearings, but could, for example, be the selector fork loose on the selector shaft.

    Hope this helps.

Seeing that on the road in the USA must cause a few Defender driver heads to turn 180 degrees (of course, each Defender driver has only one head unless from Tasmania).

G'day and welcome! I'm a bit confused sorry, did you buy an ex Australian army perentie 6X6 or the civilian 6x6 as you said? They are two different beasts that's all. Some photos be great!

My old 6x6 civilian had an LT85 to start with. It didn't last long.

I'm thinking that our friend here has that box with LT230. Not the LT95.

Perhaps he should just get one of the army LT95 boxes from the auctions and rebuild that instead of worrying about the five speed boxes.

He could fit freewheel hubs to the intermediate axle, fit 255/85/16 KM2 tyres and he would almost be approaching good fuel economy and useable RPM at 100km/h.

    Just sayin..

How is the third axle driven from the LT230? My understanding is the drive is unique to the LT95. There are, however, other 6x6 conversions that use a different system, and it is quite possible that some civilian 6x6s have this as an aftermarket alteration to allow the fitting of a five speed box.

aust civvy spec 6x6 use the lt95.

its the same vehicle as the very early mil 6x6 with the narrow front axle. sans the mil bracketry and blackouts.

there are modded 6x4s iut there that use a splitting tcase off of the rear propshaft and through drives on the intermediat axle and an exceptionally cool one ive seen photos of that looks like its running a chain drive or walkkng beam setup in the rear. its definately not a commercially available unit though.
