All Looks identical to mine (4BD1)but I have an acoustic cover. (Ex 1988 110)

It will have the engine designation written on the passenger side of the block at the bottom. In big letters.

    3.6L methinks for the 4BB1.
Superceeded by the 4BE1 which is also 3.6L with a rotary fuel pump.

The 3.3L is a 4BC2 which has the same rocker cover as the 4BD1's.

G'day All, As Justinc said it just hasn't got the 'Silencer Kit' on the rocker cover, it sure looks like an early type as fitted to some Series 3 Stage 1's, but the real proof will be the number/letters cast on the side of the block. I'd bet it's a noisey beast without that 'Silencer', cheers Dennis

Thanks v much all. I am going out west to look at vehicles in couple of weeks. I will post some decent pics then and am sure I will have more questions... The blokes at the landy parts place i shop at were convinced it was a 4bd1, but they only had the same pic i put on here... which would be the better box...LT95 or 5 speed out of a defender (R380??)?

the choice of box will depend on what you want to do with it..

If its going to be a tractor the 95 is your box of choice. If its not going to work hard but do a lot of miles and lightly loaded cross country then the R380 is your choice.

having said that the R380 in big red is still doing good things after a lot of not so nice work.

I've never seen a 4BD1 with an aluminium rocker cover, I spent a little time hunting for one before giving up. But previous engines which share a lot of parts occasionally have them.
Someone once mentioned a QD100 isuzu industrial engine.

G'day All, I'm certain that if you took off the silencer, the alloy rocker cover will be there, well it is on my 1984 110 Isuzu County or dont you own one? to check, cheers Dennis
When you remove the oil filler cap you can see the alloy cover under it.

My JDM engine is steel underneath and I think it's 86 model year.
Pull off the breather hose and see if it's a steel or alloy pipe. That pipe is the same material as the cover underneath.

It looks like that engine has a throttled air intake. That means it's earlier than the 4B series.
