You are right those 2 bolts are a real PITA to get at! I have managed it a couple of times though, I think with some strange combination of socket extensions... (once beside a cheap hotel in Guatemala - NFI how we had enough tools to do the job!).
One method is to advance until it sounds really rough (even more tractor like) then retard a bit until the engine quietens down. Last time I did it though, I removed the pipe from NO 1 injector and actually measured the timing.
