    Timing adjust.

So I'm having a problem adjusting the timing.

Specifically two of the bolts are in a location that I can't even touch, let alone get a spanner onto.
The two that I can get to take about 10 minutes each to slacken off.
I've tried threading a socket on extension down between the block and the pump, that's not happening either.

    Tips, suggestions etc?

Second question, how do you know if you're too far advanced? Black smoke is way too far, but from there what's the fine tune signals to watch for?

Dougal - just found this section existed (yes I am slow!)

You are right those 2 bolts are a real PITA to get at! I have managed it a couple of times though, I think with some strange combination of socket extensions... (once beside a cheap hotel in Guatemala - NFI how we had enough tools to do the job!).

One method is to advance until it sounds really rough (even more tractor like) then retard a bit until the engine quietens down. Last time I did it though, I removed the pipe from NO 1 injector and actually measured the timing.

you need a 3/8 drive socket set and a 1/2 - 3/8 drive adaptor with a normal extenton Bar. its a PITA to do at the best of times..

check out one of the threads I did up on tools and the correct timing adaptor is shown but from memory if you spill time#1 to 12btdc your in the ball park.

catch me up when I get back to tge real world and i'll dig up the proper numbers

I backed mine back off a bit.
From the strip down and clean I did, I figured the timing was a little more retarded than it was previously. EGT's were a little higher at cruise being the main suspicion.

I advanced the pump by 1 deg, which should be about 2 deg crank angle. The result was EGT's dropping by about 40 deg at cruise, a little rougher at very low rpm and loss of boost.
I could still get the same max boost, but it shifted about 300rpm up the rev range, to the point where I didn't have enough boost on some hills and EGT's would reach scary levels.
The logical side of me tells me this can't happen. But I convinced myself it did.

I'm now running halfway between then and before, EGT's about 10 deg higher than really advanced but boost arriving when it should.
I should check the spill timing, but the "should" list for my rover is already too damn long.

As I recall we borrowed a couple of extra tools from the guy across the street. I still don't know how I managed to say "Can I borrow your socket extension" in Spanish without getting a punch in the head
