A small update. Just wired the wastegate shut to see what would happen.

The turbo now boosts to 20 psi max and 16 psi max under normal driving (i.e. unless driving flat out on highway).

EGTs are now about 100oC lower for the same conditions. I just got back from a trip down south with a tandem kayak on the roof. Overtaking was effortless and I could sit on any speed I wanted up to 130 km/h all the way down and back.

Very happy. Just did ~1200 km and no adverse effects.

Definitely need to finish the intercooler next. (Dougal - sorry - will get those measurements for you).

    chief - what JC said.

    Good to hear Ben.
I've done some more playing with my homebuild T2560 over the break. It also does 20psi with the wastegate shut. Noticable lag over the T25 but it pulls right up to the rev limit.

The wife has a new android phone which now has some dyno software (aDyno). I hope to use this to get a 3rd gear pull logged.
I went for some runs with both a borrowed iphone with dynolicious and the android phone with aDyno running. Both agreed within 0.3 seconds for the whole run. My 0-100 times were all over the place but mostly 17 seconds.

sounds like it is going good then I noticed without touching fuelling but uping boost from around 13psi to 16psi egt's fell about 80-100°c and I find it funny that cars hate being stuck behind a old landy but as soon as theres a big hill it just eats anything in sight

Years ago when I was first considering installing a turbo I spoke to a range of installers. They all recommended running max boost of around 10 psi. I spoke to one earlier this year about what he thought about increasing my boost to around 15 psi. He said I would be running the risk of destroying the motor. I don't think he believed me when I indicated some were running 20psi boost.

A wastegate is starting to look a bit optional for these motors.

There are a lot of fragile diesels out there, this isn't one of them. The problem is 20psi is about the limit of common turbos. You need to find a holset or Schwitzer to get a decent pressure capability, otherwise build a compound turbo set.
Our engine bays are a bit tight for compound sets. Going to EAS front shock positions should help that though.

IRC factory 4BD1T wastegates are set at ~16 psi.

My IHI RHB6 wastegate didn't start to move until 20psi was applied. Fully open at 25psi.
No idea why it was that high, 13psi with no intercooler is enough for the factory power levels.

    [QUOTE=Dougal;1295161]Aha, found it.

This manifold Ben has found with the end inlets is the later 4BE1 manifold which I have currently found for sale for not much.
With a plenum that large I want it, but one question: "Will it fit"?

I'm worried about bonnet clearance and injector lines. Are you around to give us some measurements Ben?[/QUOTE

i have the same manifold but mine is a 4bd1.

Great! Thanks for that! I don't suppose you can take another pic from the top showing the spacing between the injector lines and the manifold?

    That's because they're stoopid

Boost don't hurt Diesel engines, EGT's do
