3 Bolt vs 4 Bolt steeringbox?

    Hi there
The 3bolt steeringbox in the county is on it's way out, so we need to decide which way to go, reconditioned 3bolt or second hand 4bolt with 3bolt adapters?
the reconditioned 3bolt is twice the price of the second hand 4bolt.

Whats up with your 3 bolt? a seal kit is not much.

I have had no problems with my 3 bolt box, it hasnt used a drop of fluid in 150,000kms, but last week the nut worked its way loose. I might lose the useless tab washer and get a locknut.

I'd go with the chaper option, but look carefully at the replaement box as high km ones can have the chrome worn off the internals, reco-ed or not.

Well it's got 465,000 km's on it and we have run it dry for about ten km's once when we broke the steering, and there is slack in it so the the steering won't fully tighten up.

In my previous county, I managed to crack the external housing on my 3 bolt doing a 3-point turn in the bush on a narrow track. Replaced it with a 4 bolt cause they were easier to source and was told by the PS place that they were stronger.

I was led to believe the 3 Bolt is bigger and heavier and is called the Heavy Duty Steering Box
