Torque Impulse

I'm going to try increasing the flywheel weight - just haven't had time to visit the machine shop I normally use (since we moved office it is further out of my way).

From my measurements (Isuzu truck engine and gearbox) there is no room to move the surface for the clutch plate out (unless the gearbox is spaced back from the flywheel housing). The throwout bearing just clears the pressure plate when it is as far back as it can go.

My flywheel has a cast recess on the front side (opposite side to clutch). I want to skim machine the inside diameter and face of the recess to take a disc machined from plate to suit.

The flywheel will be drilled and tapped so the new disc can be bolted to it.

The heads of the 2 lower bolts used to mount the flywheel to the rear of the engine block will interfere with the new disc. So the flywheel housing will have to be recessed so shorter bolts can be used (there is plenty of thickness there to allow the bolt heads to be recessed the required 10mm.

My engine has already been balanced, so the modified flywheel will have to be re-balanced.

Approx 0.15 kg m^2

Adding disc approx 334 mm od x 200 mm id x 18 mm thk. Mass approx 7.94 kg.

Solidworks tells me the inertia of my flywheel (for a 275mm clutch) is 0.345 kgm^2.
I wonder how different the 300mm clutch flywheels are?

I just measured my landie version.
16.0 kg
390 mm across the machined face
390 mm across the ring gear
165 mm across the recess

though mine might weigh a bit less after the grooves have been machine out... :(

After machining it is now 15.9 kg, and 31.35 mm thick. I am very tempted to add some metal to the back, but don't have a machinist I would trust, and would like to get it back on the road ASAP...

Correct me if I'm wrong, add bits and/or that I missed.

We currently have a 4BD1 with 4peed from a 1982 Landie in our Rangie, to go 5 speed one option is to bolt a Isuzu MSA5G 5 speed directly to the 4BD1, get/make an adaptor plate to attach LT230, everything else bolts in, the box uses lever action not cable.

So I would now be using an Isuzu starter? meaning the chassis has to be notched?

Do I have the sequence correct for this gearbox/transfer case?

How much lower will noise levels be?

With talk on the forum about 5 speed boxes connected to the 4BD1 and heavy towing being a No No up hill is that still the case.

Isuzu truck flywheel housing is different to that fitted by Land Rover. Australian isuzu trucks have a 24V starter (2 bolt instead of 3) that is mounted lower and will interfere with the chassis.

The offset gear reduction method used in the starter, pushes the motor further away from the engine block.

You may be able to find a 12V starter with inline gear reduction that doesn't protrude as much. This is an option I am pursuing, but not urgent at this stage. Dougal uses a direct drive starter (but 12v motor running from 24v to gain more torque without gear reduction).

You will have to fabricate a gearbox mount for the left side.

The clutch slave cylinder is in a different location on the Isuzu truck.

The pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft is different (6203 ball bearing with seals bot sides) - no mods needed (remove old nose piece and fit new bearing).

Clutch is different. Isuzu truck had 2 sizes (275mm and 300mm), if you use the smaller clutch plate to match the gearbox input shaft, one, you may not have to change the pressure plate. The bolt holes on your flywheel will not match the larger pressure plate - you may be able to drill new holes.

I don't know if the ring gear on your flywheel will be compatible with the truck starter.

Have you read this thread in the Isuzu forum? This would avoid a lot of these issues.

With the Isuzu 5 speed, towing in 5th is not a problem. Passing while towing in 5th isn't a problem if you have enough boost.
